Fan noise out of nowhere, out of warranty, am I screwed?

2021-05-27, 19:18 PM

Hey all, my right fan on my laptop now for some reason is making a loud whirring noise, see below the video of the sound:

Streamable Video

unfortunately my warranty ran out in December 2020, am I SOL ? I opened the back but there's nothing caught in the fan that I can see, I didn't drop my laptop at all either, this just started to happen out of nowhere.

Anyone else encounter this?

My laptop is:

Legion Y540-15IRH Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 81SX

Fans collect a lot of dust, so if you have not already tried cleaning them, try using a vacuum and some canned air (Dusf Off etc.) to see if that helps.    If still a problem, you can purchase replacement fans online for about $60.00 (C$72.40) and replace them if needed.

If you decide to replace the fans yourself, it is important that you obtain some non-metallic spudgers to pry open the case, and immediately unplug the battery before doing any work inside the laptop.

Note:  One of the biggest mistakes people make is using metal object to pry open the case, and not unplugging the battery.  After unplugging the battery, is is also a good idea to press and hold the power button for a few seconds just to be sure there is no residual power too.    I have used large guitar picks in a pinch, but I find that triangular spudgers are the way to go, and you can sometimes find them locally in a good computer store.

The process of removing case etc. is shown in the videos below

Below are a few sources for original Lenovo replacement fans.    You can search for the Lenovo part number 5F10S13888 and find some aftermarket fans for less, but they may be of inferior quality than the originals.
