How to lock FN keys (Y520)

How do I lock the FN keys so I can use the functions without pressing FN?

I tried looking in Bios, there is no option for it.

Re: How to lock FN keys (Y520)

Hi Bananaplox,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Similar to this discussion, no found option in BIOS configuration tab to hotkey switch model.

Some keyboard is with FN lock with FN + ESC to do it.

Other have tried using different external keyboard else third party tool like AutoHotkey that claims to work for them.

Regards

Unfortunately, I don't think that AutoHotKey can provide a complete solution.

You can create a script for AutoHotKey to trap the keys F1 to F12, and specify what actions you want them to perform (for example, perform the normal actions F1 to F12).

But I don't think that AutoHotKey can trap the FN key.  Consequently, you cannot specify what actions the keys FN_F1 to FN_12 should perform.  So, actions such as VOLUME_UP and VOLUME_DOWN which are currently assigned to the F keys, would become inaccessible from the keyboard.  The original poster may consider this to be an acceptable compromise.

Functions that become inaccessible from the keyboard can probably be accessed from "Lenovo Settings" or Windows "Settings" panels.

Re: How to lock FN keys (Y520)

On Y520 I don't think this is possible. Also, FN key cannot be captured to record a script of any sort (I have researched this extensively).

Which Fn keys do you press regularly, maybe there are alternate solutions.

Mostly the volume/brightness, and I've been trying to look for an alternative for my Lenovo Z510 F9 button, where you can turn off the screen and only that button can turn it back on (but the computer is still on and functioning).

Hi Bananaplox ,

Some software can be used to perform the same function.

As example, to turn off display without sleep mode you can use screen off that you can also place on the taskbar.

Similarly dimmer works well in Windows 10 , audio control can be changed through the speaker icon at anytime.

Besides what spidey mentioned,

I can personally suggest that if you can, use a programmable mouse so that you can assign some of those settings to mouse buttons Smiley Happy
