Ideapad Y700 Freezes

My Y700 is less than 2-month old. Recently, I was facing the following issue. I am able to repeat the issue by only boot up the laptop and leave it without running any other applications.

1. First, the keyboard becomes non-responsive after sometime. At this point, the mouse from touch pad still works, and I can continue the applications (if any) I already started. However, trying to launch any new application, even as simple as "cmd" or "taskmgr" will fail.

2. Some time later, the laptop totally freezes. Sometimes, it will reboot and enter the "Nova button mode" - but still, the keyboard freezes and I can't select any other options (once I tried to attach an external USB keyboard before it freezes, then in the Nova button mode, the external keyboard works, but any option, "normal boot", "recovery mode", or whatever, simply fails and hangs). Sometimes, it simply hangs. In both cases, the only thing I can do is keep pressing the power button to force shut down.

This is really annoying. Anybody has similar experience? Any solution? (I could try factory restore, but come on...it is only 2-month old!)

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Hi intermilan00 ,

Greetings.

As you have described that same freezing of keyboard also appears on the Novo Menu not allowing you to choose option , as others may may done draining power cutting off the battery and ac source.

As for this case I would suggest to try backing up your data first as needed and update current BIOS offered on the support site to follow guideline set from the Readme file and this discussion.

If still having the same issue , please call in tech support for recommended action plan .

Hope this help answer your query

Update us how things go.

Regards

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Hi,

The Problem appears to be with the EC (embedded controler) on the motherboard.

I have written about this issue before here:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Y700-Embedded-controller-problem/m-p/3304460/hi...

it happens mainly when you plug in the AC adapter, there is somekind of voltage drop\increse which causes the EC to malfunction.

A generic embedded controller often has the following tasks: (from wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embedded_controller)

  • Receiving and processing signals from the keyboard[1] and other buttons and switches (e.g., power button, laptop lid switch)[2]
  • Turning the computer on and off
  • Controlling access to the A20 line[3]
  • Thermal measurement and response including fan control, CPU throttling, and emergency shutdown in response to rising temperatures
  • Controlling indicator LEDs
  • Managing the battery charger and the battery[2]
  • Allowing remote diagnostics and remediation over the network
  • Performing software-requested CPU reset[1]
  • Controlling the watchdog timer[2]

I'm a computer engineer, the computer was like this strait out of the box, and i couldn't figure out the problem for long so i've done my share of homework about this issue.

Don't have good newsthough, the thing finaly helped me was to change the whole motherboard in a service center.

Thanks for the reply!

I had a compouter engineering degree but I do not have your expetise.

So it seems that unless there is a recall by Lenovo, we users could hardly do anything about this freeze, right?

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Hi,

For me the issue happened when the AC adapter was on (that's what caused the Voltage drop/increase i described above). It could happen when it was 100% or 30% randomly.

I guess your computer is still under warranty,
so if i were you, i would go to the service center and ask them to replace the motherboard (that's what helped me back then).

Also you can double check your problem with the
windows Event Viewer, and trace the critical freeze time. If you find something like this :

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Y700-Embedded-controller-problem/m-p/3453226#M1...

Than only changing the MB will help.

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Thanks again for the reply.

I live in San Diego and there is no service center near by. Hate to mail in for service ... I'll try to live with it for a couple of more weeks...

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Hi All ,

Just to reference another case that was discussed here , option to try for now is to perform the BIOS changes if needed.

CDCN35WW 8/17/2016 is now made available .

Before flashing the BIOS :

Please check the BIOS version of your machine first before flashing the latest BIOS. Following different ways to check BIOS version in System Information windows.

  • Windows 10: Input msinfo32 in Cotana (start search box) and press Enter key
  • Windows 7: Open Run box by pressing Win+R, input msinfo32and press Enter key

If BIOS version is older than V30, please update to v35 firstly, and then update to V37 or above version;

If BIOS version is above V30, you can update it to the latest version directly.

If this fails to resolve the issue have it worked with technical support as the warranty provides similar to what resolves dami1's . Upgrading warranty to Onsite service may help or check with Best Buy if they would also be able to support In Warranty service if sending it to depot is not possible at the moment.

Regards

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

Did you tryed to reformat the laptop i had similar issue with your second problem when i restarted it entered nova mode i think windows 10 had a global problem with a similar issue that is fixed in update mabye your registry is messed up.
Download "latest" win 10 iso " important "with media creationtool from microsoft and use rufu now make sure its gpt patriot in patriot scheme this is important then after done formating dont connect to internet skip now go straight and download acpi and others drivers and put then to hhd before reformat im sure you have a ssd thats why or if you have a usb from other pc and make sure acpi its installing it should ask for a restart pc do it then intel manger and chipset latest intel graphic latest beta drivers from intel website same for nividia and then connect to internet go and do windows updates wait till it ends. This also could help with dam1 problem cause this only way acpi install right way for me on lenovo y700 17inch.Also help with temps this way reduced by -10C.Hope its helps.

Re: Ideapad Y700 Freezes

I've been buying pricey gaming laptops now for years. And what my answer to this is Lenovo is a Le No no! I had the freezing keyboard(fixed with BIOS update) and from there it has just been non stop shuttering, freezing and crashing. Often in task manager I can see my disk, GPU, memory, etc running at 100%!!!? And they all fluctuate with no real answers. This laptop is total garbage and I'm pissed I wasted a thousand of my hard earned cash on something broken since day 1!!! I cant play any games on low quality even because this laptop is trash!!! Lenovo is a trash company with defective products and HORRIBLE customer support or service. I just bought a $2k Alienware and I will stick with them from now on.
