Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

The built in keyboard does not work on Windows 11. The keyboard does work in BIOS and on a Linux dual boot. External keyboards do work (I am using one right now). For these reasons I believe it is a driver issue.

Laptop: Legion Y540-15IRH

OS: Windows 11

Things I have tried:

Rebooted the computer

Updated driver through windows device manager

Reinstalled driver through windows device manager

Windows check for updates and optional updates

Checked Lenovo Vantage and Lenovo online manual driver update

I have already spoken with Windows support and they were unable to resolve the issue. They recommended reaching out to manufacturer support.

This has really stumped me for some time now and I would welcome any recommendations.

Hello @guest21746,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Could you please check if a clean boot will help?

Here's how: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/troubleshoot/lpt000322

Hope this helps.

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

Thank you for the response Jack!

I have tried that and it did not help.

Another confounding factor that I have discovered is that the keyboard works on some boots and not on others. As in sometimes when the computer boots up the keyboard works totally normally and other times when the computer boots up the keyboard is completely unresponsive. The keyboard never stops working when it is already working and never starts working when it fails.

Because of this I began questioning my own driver diagnosis. I now believe this to be some kind of error in the bootup process. I have tried a clean boot and I have tried booting up in safe mode, neither changed anything. I opened up my computer and unplugged/reattached the keyboard ribbon cable to the motherboard, and it changed nothing.

Thoughts?

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

Hello @larvarg,

Thank you for writing back.

It might be best to try out a reinstall of the OS using DDRS: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103653-lenovo-digital-download-recovery-service-ddrs-download-the-files-needed-to-create-a-lenovo-usb-recovery-key

We recommend to  back up important files before trying this out.

Hope this helps.

Did you ever resolve this issue? If so, how?

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

Hi dinardoj,

Unfortunately, I don't have an update on whether the issue was resolved or not. The last suggestion was to reinstall the OS using DDRS. You might want to try that if you're experiencing the same issue. Remember to back up your important files before proceeding.

If you need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Jack_Lenovo1

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

I also have this issue. It started happening about a week ago and seemed to be intermittent. The issue became less intermittent and now seems to be permanent. During boot the keyboard backlight LED do not turn on and the keyboard does not work. The white key state LEDs flash as usual during startup.

However, if I unplug the power cable and force a complete shutdown by holding the power button until its white LED goes out, on the subsequent boot the keyboard and backlight LEDs work correctly.

I doubt very much that this is an OS issue. The LEDs turn on within a small part of a second when the system works correctly, so long before the BIOS has handed off to the OS in my estimation.

My laptop is a Legion Pro 7 16IRX8

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

Hi PeterJaquiery,

I understand your concern. It seems like you've already tried some troubleshooting steps. If the issue persists, it might be a hardware issue. I recommend contacting Lenovo support or visiting a local authorized service center to have your laptop checked. You can find a local service center using this link.

Remember to back up your important files before proceeding with any hardware checks or repairs.

Best regards,

Re:Keyboard does not work on Windows 11

My laptop is now fixed. It took replacing both the keyboard (probably not needed to be done) and the motherboard and about a month!

I still think this is a design issue, perhaps related to power supply sequencing and startup time causing a marginal race condition between the keyboard electronics starting up and main system.
