Lags when connecting Legion 5 over HDMI

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask:

When I plug my Legion 5 via HDMI to any TV, the laptop's screen is smooth but on the TV everything moves very laggy, specifically videos but not just it.

When I set the projection to either "extend" or "duplicate" everything moves smooth, but when using it "second screen only" it's going back to being choppy.

I tried it on different TV's, plug in and not, tried to update my GPU and everything...

Does anyone knows how to solve this?

Thanks in advance!

Hello @flaymon,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would suggest checking in Lenovo vantage or in the BIOS if your machine is set to discrete mode rather than Hybrid mode.

Setting the machine to discrete mode will allow it to use the Nvidia GPU which should give you better performance with external displays.

Hope this helps.

Re:Lags when connecting Legion 5 over HDMI

Now I have another question, is there a way I can use the GPU when plugged to tv, but have the hybrid one when not? I see that the discrete mode is taking much more battery than before... Is there a mode that uses kinda combine the two?

Re:Lags when connecting Legion 5 over HDMI

Hello @flaymon ,

Sorry for the late reply.

Hybrid mode automatically switches the GPU from integrated to discrete when it requires the machine to do so.

Since the external display ports of most Legion 5's are connected to the Nvidia GPU it should use the discrete card whenever there is an external display connected.

Re:Lags when connecting Legion 5 over HDMI

Thanks for the reply!

So why do I have lags when in hybrid mode and connected to HDMI?

Once I changed it do discrete the problem resolved, but now the laptop takes too much battery power.

Is there anyway I can use hybrid mode and force it to go to GPU when on HDMI?

Re:Lags when connecting Legion 5 over HDMI

Hello @flaymon ,

Sorry for the late reply.

This machines external ports are connected to the Nvidia GPU.

Meaning if you are on Hybrid mode this is only going to be viable without a monitor connected.

As usual Lenovo's answer to everything is "turn it off". Rather than sort the issue, work around it.

I have this issue regarding HDMI out to a TV. Manually having to turn Hybrid mode On and Off depending on your settings for screen extension / projection to avoid input lag is utterly ridiculous. The integrated GPU has more than enough juice to provide low latency. Nobody needs a beefy internal discrete GPU to keep input latency down. Jack's logic (and by extension, Lenovo) is that any Lenovo machine that doesn't have internal discrete graphics and runs on an APU must suffer unacceptably high input lag when using second screen only projection. Ludicrous. Unless of course this isn't the case and Lenovo are hereby acknowledging that these are in fact problems that need to be addressed in updates, right?

So far we have system settings that don't save beyond hibernation (Lenovo provided a temporary Vantage (software) fix that doesn't extend beyond hibernation (3+ hour sleeps), system stutter that effects gaming, general use, work, etc and external input lag if Hybrid mode (integrated graphics are used) is off. Couple this with naff warranty options and battery extension not included (sold separately) and it has become abundantly clear that the more one uses Lenovo products the more of a disaster it really is. Literal nightmare.

To any outsiders not yet a part of the Lenovo community who happen to be considering a purchase and are here reading this, save yourself the hassle and opt for somebody else.

The best answer to this question is you aren;t using a good quality HDMI cable. It happens sometime that HDMI cable's poor quality doesn't allow the data to transfer so efficiently. So I think you should go for a new and better HDMI cable Here

Sounds like bs to me, like when people years ago were coerced into buying $90 Monster cables. And the brand new 4K cable I have, you're telling me can't handle 1080p with decent latency. No. Also proving that this is bull: disabling hybrid mode solves the problem.

You're either trolling or a dodgy merchant advertising on Lenovo's forum. Either way both aren't allowed.
