Laptop wont charge. Stuck at 95% plugged in not charging.

I have a new lenovo laptop and i have it always plugged in... just recently i started to worry cause i would notice it wont charge at times when its at 97%. it would say Plugged in, not charging.

i have installed all the drivers and utilities here (drivers) and lenovo vantage.

in lenovo vantage i found conservative mode already OFF. yet the battery is at 95% at this time and its still not charging.

Shouldnt it charge if Conservative mode is turned off?

Re: Laptop wont charge. Stuck at 95% plugged in not charging.

Hi aalmosawi,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking on the hardware manual on most Idealine laptops, often that it would say:

"Battery charging does not start until the Power Meter shows that less than 95% of the total power remains; under this condition the battery pack can charge to 100% of its capacity. This protects the battery pack from being overcharged or from having a shortened life."

This would serve as an internal buffer of the battery firmware to prevent overcharging. Keeping the battery within 20-80% ideally is also known to extend battery life cycle rather than full draining and full charging.

You may also try running the machine in safe mode to check charging.

Regards

Re: Laptop wont charge. Stuck at 95% plugged in not charging.

Here's the thing. This is a gaming laptop for one. I would like this option disabled completely because I always have it plugged in.

This laptop comes with core i7, 16gigs of ram and a nice video card plus its heavy . In other words I will never use it like I would use an iPad.

Is there a way to completely disble this feature ?? I have installed lenovo settings utility  which showed me a conservative mode on or off but whether it's on or off it did nothing for me.

[update] not sure what i did to make it fully charge to 100% but I completely discharged the battery by unplugging the power adaptor, kept the system on and left it. came back after a few hours and found it zeroed out and turned off. i plugged it in and started to monitor it via Lenovo Vantage. It completely charged to full...100%

i am sure if i keep it plugged in it'll go back to 95% .... as i stated, this laptop is always plugged in.

oddly enough, the "Conservative mode" option has dissapeared. Why?

this is on a Y520-15IKBN laptop.

Re: Laptop wont charge. Stuck at 95% plugged in not charging.

Hi aalmosawi,

Greetings.

When connected to the AC charger and having everything set to full performance, the machine is switched to AC mode so you do not need to mind the battery as discussed in this and  this post.

If you really like to disable all power management softwares, instead of clean installing Windows, start by disabling some start up application on task manager. You can likewise all together uninstall Lenovo Vantage , System Interface Foundation , Lenovo Setting or even to use similar tool like Revo uninstaller to remove associated folders and registry too.

Linked discussions can help you decide if you really need to do this.

Regards

furthermore, the only lenovo items that appear in the Uninstall section are: Lenovo Diagnostics Tool Lite, Lenovo Nerve center, Lenovo Service Bridge.

Lenovo Vantage doesnt even appear. Another item i installed was Lenovo EM (Energy management). it doesnt even appear.

My question is: What program is causing this behaviour?

Re: Laptop wont charge. Stuck at 95% plugged in not charging.

Hi aalmosawi,

Greetings.

Couple of factors that may come into play.

Battery firmware is designed to prevent fully charging to 100% as safety net.

Windows 10 battery saver features and synchorization of WIndows to actual value via Microsoft acpi-compliant control method battery (uninstalling from device manager to refresh).

Lenovo Vantage along with its components Lenovo ACPI-Compliant Virtual Power Controller and System Interface Foundation V2 Device.

Regards

Hello
Is it normal for the battery to go down while it is connected to the charger?
or should I worry?
