Legion 15 Pro 6 (AMD 5800H, RTX 3070) - XMP support coming soon?

2021-09-27, 13:27 PM

This is a fantastic machine, but I'm sad to find that it has no XMP support. This makes it rather painful when fitting CL16 3200 MHz RAM and it gets run at CL19 2666 MHz (in my case, with Mushkin Redline).

I'd like to register my interest in XMP support coming to this machine, and was told a forum thread would be the best way to do this, and to invite like-minded users to also highlight their interest as well.

I have a legion 7i and I agree that XMP support is important. I rated the machine lower because it didn’t have this support.

I have 15ach6h and I agree. Being able to use XMP profiles can help a lot.

Agreed, the 7i 11980KH's need it to. Since we can't even get manual fan control I'm not holding my breath for XMP.

Given that Ryzen loves faster RAM, XMP profiles would be nice. Even if it only tightens up the timings.

That being said anything that gives users more options would be good. Custom power profiles for example. Or enabling Curve Optimizer/CTR/Hydra-like third party tools if that even can be done by tinkering with the BIOS that is.

But if XMP is all we get, I'll take it.

I have a Legion 5 (non-pro), and am quite interested in this feature, it's another benefit/sell point feature to a machine marketed as a gaming laptop.

The included ram as of late for many gaming laptop configurations is on the slow end, with manufacturing pushing towards ram w/ lower density and worse latency that is easily overlooked by many. Adding XMP support opens up more opportunities towards performance/value upgrades.

I have the L5Pro 3060 version and having performance problems in CPU bound scenarios already XMP support would be greatly reduce this on especially AMD CPUs. Waiting for the updates on this question.

I've been able to use 2 of these machines, as my first came with a dead speaker. I got to keep the first until the replacement arrived. The 2 machines shipped with different RAM. Having done significant performance testing on both, I can attest to the significant fluctuations in performance with different RAM. Having access to XMP in the BIOS, and any other setting adjustments for RAM, would be very beneficial to get these laptops operating at their potential.

Quite weird for Lenovo to build a (on paper) good gaming laptop with very good specs only to limit the output by not using XMP.

This does make significant difference, especially because the standard supplied RAM is not up to par.

You already need to replace those to get better performance even without XMP but XMP would make a larger upgrade possible.

CAS 22 or 16 is quite the difference on 3200.

When can we expect an upgrade?

Looks like AMD doesn't support XMP on Ryzen 7 and 9 so makes sense Lenovo can't activate it in the BIOS. So best you can get is JEDEC and I believe I found a Gskill with CAS 16 on 1.2v. That should work too.
