Legion 5 Windows Encryption (15ACH6H)

2021-10-21, 6:56 AM

Does the Legion 5 support windows encryption ?

Basic device encryption on windows 10 or 11 requires the following:

  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2 with support for Modern Standby.
  • TPM must be enabled.
  • Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware style.

The legion 5 does not appear to meet these requirements due to the lack of support for Modern Standby i.e. the laptop can not be put into that standby mode due to the lenovo firmware preventing it.

I can not get windows encryption to work. Has anyone been able to get windows encryption with a legion 5 laptop storage drive ?

Hello @MikeMoy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK or 20UD000BUS) from the sticker usually under the case.

This would help us detail more about your machine variant while keeping the confidentiality of your serial number.

On the Windows 11 supported Lenovo machine list does include Legion 5 15ACH6H.

Check for compatibility using the Microsoft PC Health Check App.

@spidey101

The minimum requirements for installing windows 11 are not the same as the minimum requirements for windows device encryption.

Windows 11 Install requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0

Windows device encryption require Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 with modem standby enabled.

Lenovo appear to have firmware disabled legion 5 laptops from entering standby mode "modern standby".

Modern standby allows the laptop to go into standby mode while still keeping some of the laptop components powered which results in faster "boot" times.

Modern Standby is also called S0 Low Power Idle.

To check if a computer has moden standby enabled open command prompt and type "powercfg/a"

Lenovo firmware seems to be preventing windows device encryption from operating by disabling Modern Standby.

Hello  @MikeMoy  ,

Greetings.

Implementation can be different on each variants even with the same model.

MTM may be needed for us to get into details.

Try the Windows checkup and see how it goes.

It believe that it would add more information to the machine at hand.
