Legion 5P Memory Upgrade

2021-07-14, 9:57 AM

I'd like to upgrade my Legion 5P to 32GB RAM (2x16) but after lots of reading I've ended up very confused - I think mainly because of the single/dual rank confusion which I'd never heard of before. I've narrowed my choice down to

1. Crucial CT2K16G4SFRA32A - single rank, I think, but spec says Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8 ( I've no idea what this means )

2. Crucial CT2K16G4DFD832A - dual rank ( but this is older and more expensive than the previous one. Again, totally confused - I thought dual rank was supposed to be better? )

3. HyperX Impact HX432S20IBK2 - dual rank, I think !

4. HyperX Impact HX432S20IB2K2 - I understand this is the newer model of the previous one but I believe it's single rank.

If anyone can help me understand which is best for the Legion 5P I'd be extremely grateful. I'll be doing graphic design, video editing and Blender stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Hello @razorpig,

I'd advise you to either get the Crucial CT2K16G4DFD832A or HyperX Impact HX432S20IBK2. They should give you a tRFC (ns) value of 350 and tRFC value of 560. These values can be checked with a program called Zentimings. To get into details you can watch Jarrod's Video about Why Legion 5 Pro Underperforms Explained.

Latency-wise the impact has CL20 while crucial has CL22. Many say lower latency is better but for me, the performance only differs from 1-3% between CL20 and CL22.

I am using Teamgroup's T-Create Classic 8GBx2 TTCCD48G3200HC22-S01 (16GB) CL22, like 1. Crucial CT2K16G4SFRA32A, it is 1Rx8 (single) or 2Rx8 (dual).

I was lucky enough to get 2Rx8 for my machine (Legion 5 15ACH6H).

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. That video is very informative. So from your post, I guess "1Rx8 (single) or 2Rx8 (dual)" means it comes in single or dual channel configuration but you don't get to choose - is that right? Seems a bit crazy ! :-)

I have one more follow up question if you don't mind? I just noticed that the price of the HX432S20IB2K2 (listed as Kit of 2,16bit) just dropped by almost £25 so it's now only £10 more than the older HX432S20IBK2 ( which is listed as a Kit of 2 but not 16 bit ). I don't really understand what this 16bit means in relation to RAM, but instinct tells me that it should be better then the older non-16bit one. Would it not be better for me to go for the latest model, or have I overlooked something? Sorry for the additional question - my brain just gets so fried when I try reading about this stuff !

It is better to get 8-bit than 16-bit modules. There are a bunch of ram modules out there that comes in 1Rx8, 1Rx16, 2Rx8 and 2Rx16 configuration. The bits mentioned are known more as banks, lesser the banks the better it is for the performance as for what I have seen to people buying rams for their Ryzen machines. I am not sure if this is the same with Intel machines.

This forum can help you get more ideas on this topic because it is complex to explain and there is a lot of factors to mention in one reply but it is in Russian.

To answer the other question, HX432S20IBK2, is 2Rx8 as indicated in its spec. sheet. Not everything new is better, look up spec. sheets or reviews to compare products if available. Some older models work better than newer ones.

I hope this helps!
