Legion Y520 audio static/crackling

2017-10-05, 2:31 AM

Hello I have looked around on the forums and googled to see if anyone else has this problem. I have not found anything.

I bought my Laptop about 2 weeks ago and it has been having this random static/crackling sound whenever I play games. Some games it is more prevelant than others. Spotify sometimes has it, depends on the song. I can't figure out what the hell it is. I've tried recording video with audio through the built in screen recorder that comes with nerve sense. But it doesn't show up at all in the video. It comes through the built in speakers, and headphones.

I've checked my drivers through pcsupport.lenovo, and diagnosed my audio controller. Everything up to date and no problems found through diagnosis.

I will take a video of this to show what it sounds like if no one knows what this is.

Hello Geillerjunge

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Sounds like it could be some sort of power issue or perhaps even a connection issue on the inside.

Try to download the Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.

And Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Hello Krakken,

I downloaded and installed the chipset driver and restarted. It still is having this audio problem.

And since my laptop does not have a removable battery I skipped those steps.

I am going to take a small video with my phone to see if I can capture the sound.

I have the exact same issue.  It also happens when watching YouTube, and with no other applications open.  Others that have had this issue suggest it could be an audio driver (Realtek,) or a GPU issue.  I have tried switching to the Microsoft audio driver with little success (seems to slightly better the issue, but not much.)

Lenovo, we need a real fix for this issue ASAP–it is truly unacceptable to QA certify these units in this condition.  The most frustrating aspect is that I made a legit purchase of this Legion Y520 through Costco, and when I enter my Y520's full serial information, it says there is NO SUPPORT AVAILABLE via email, chat, or phone.  What is going on?

Exactly so, but mine is much more pronounced, including audio clipping buzz (a fraction of a second of sound that is constantly repeated for 1/2 to 1 second.)  It gets worse when a game or video is running for a long time.

The saddest thing is that this clicking/popping noise happened for me while watching your demo video clip.

Lenovo, please take this issue seriously and fix it ASAP, as it must be affecting the entire line of Legion Y520 laptops!!!

Dear Lenovo, we are still waiting for an update that resolves the issue.  It affects system performance, not just audio popping, crackling and distorting:  when playing a game or watching a video, it will actually freeze for up to a few seconds, not allowing any keyboard or mouse input.  This issue is more serious than previously discussed, and needs to be dealt with.

Thank you for trying to help, Krakken, but this issue is either a software driver that needs to be corrected by Lenovo, or a defective audio/video/cpu component that was not properly QA tested upon manufacturing, mass deployed to Lenovo–who also did not QA test it, put into laptops, and then deployed to retailers.  Testing it would have been as simple as watching a video file on the computer, or going to YouTube and watching a video.  The complexity of the video or game content does not matter, as simple advertisements on websites also trigger this nightmarish issue.

Lenovo, I'm going to return this laptop and get my money back, and probably go buy a laptop from another company if you aren't going to bother replying anytime soon.

You had someone promptly answer my post when I first posted, where'd you go?
