Legion Y530-15ICH Laptop Bios Update with Linux

2019-01-26, 14:30 PM

Lenovo only provides a Windows10 executable for download: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/de/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y530-15ich/downloads

I tried to use this *.exe with FreeDOS 1.2, but the program terminates and complains that it only support Win32.

Lenovo started to support fwupd, but the Legion Y530-15ICH seems not supported - yet. Is Lenovo planning to support fwupd for the Y530 model?

How can I update the Bios of this laptop without a Microsoft OS? I am using Linux Manjaro.

I just tried a Windows10 Repair Console, as described here. What should I say, the Lenovo BIOS Update executable 8jcn49ww.exe says that it does not support this OS.

This is ridiculous Lenovo!

There are so many practicable solutions out there. What was wrong with these bootable images, which I could dd onto a USB Stick and boot it for an update? Or a Bios which can detect and load a firmware from a fat32 formatted USB-Stick? Or an executable which can work from freedos, or from linux?

You can use innoextract and 7z tools to extract bios binary file (BIOS.fd) from exe installer.
Follow the instructions below to create usb flash drive for bios recovery:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops/Y700-Bios-Recovery-Blind-Flash-Possible/m-p/4178802#M19027
The instructions are for Lenovo Y700, but perhaps this method also works on newer models.
Other option would be to create bootable flash drive based on Windows PE (for example, Hiren’s BootCD PE) and try to upgrade bios from there.

Original installer is packed with "Inno Setup". So, to get to the bios file you need to do two extractions.

~$ innoextract 8jcn49ww.exe
~$ cd app/
~$ 7z e 8JCN49WW.exe
~$ ls
8JCN49WW.exe Ding.wav H2OFFT32.sys H2OFFT.inf Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest msvcr90.dll
BIOS.fd FlsHook.exe H2OFFT64.sys H2OFFT-W.exe Microsoft.VC90.MFC.manifest platform.ini
BiosImageProc.dll FWUpdLcl.exe H2OFFT.cat mfc90u.dll msvcp90.dll WDFInst.exe

If you don't want to risk turning your laptop into a doorstop by attempting to use an unsupported method to update the BIOS, remember that you can download a FREE copy of Windows 10 from the Microsoft web site, install it, and use it for up to 30 days without having to activate it.  That should be long enough to update the BIOS.

Remember to use your favourite disk imaging tool to create an image of your entire disk BEFORE installing Windows.  Then you can restore that image after you have updated the BIOS.

Interesting, thank you @UbW5!

Yeah I will definitely not try this BIOS.fd file without a "GO" from the Lenovo support @CyberSimian.

I am new to this Lenovo forum, are Lenovo employees here who can give me a reliable statement to this procedure?

There are Lenovo employees who participate in this forum; look immediately below their name on the left, and you will see them identified as such.  However...

The only reliable statement that a Lenovo employee will give you is "Use the recommended procedure for updating the BIOS.  Do NOT use unsupported procedures".

The only supported procedure is to use Windows 10.  If you want to try using the procedure described by UbW5, you do so at your own risk.  If it goes wrong, Lenovo won't repair the laptop under warranty.  You would need to pay for it to be repaired (which might mean a new motherboard, i.e. expensive).
