Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

After reading about people having issues with their AC adapters I decided to do some checking on my end. My AC adapter does indeed produce a coil whine of some sort (a buzzing noise) when I bring it closer to my ears. Now I know that coil whine is rather common in wall chargers and other day-to-day electronics, but I'am not sure if it's normal for a laptop charger. I haven't had any battery discharge problems that other people have mentioned (as of yet). Should I be concerned?

Re: Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

Hi campingtree,

Greetings.

It is at times usual for charging part to have certain degree of coil whines. If such would be very noticeable and have heating issue ( not only with battery issue) then best to have it reported to technical support for safety measure.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

I have noticed the strange buzzing, abnormal noice from the y530 AC adapter too. My friend has the same laptop and he also said he did hear strange noise, (did not hear myself, but he did sound suprised)

Statisically speaking, there is a very low chance that both mine and my friend's laptop AC adapter happens to be faulty. So what I am assuming is that the noise from the adapter is actually OKAY, or at least won't harm the laptop itself.

Additional: I have recently removed the HDD and swapped the Intel Optane Memory with M.2 SSD. Since the HDD sound is gone, I have noticed  a minor buzzing noise (coilewhine?) from the laptop itself. And I have no idea what is causing it, kinda need some help.

Re: Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

If there is minor buzzing sound from the charger, like really low that you can only hear if you get close to the charger, then it is Fine (no issues).

If you hear a buzzing sound from laptop, can you please answer the following -

1) Do you hear it when you start the laptop / do normal stuff / play games? (In which scenario)

2) Is it really loud, as in, can you hear it clearly while working on the laptop?

Can you hear it if you play music on 30% volume?

Can you hear it if you play a game with sound on?

3) If you switch off the laptop, do you still hear a buzzing sound?

If you put your ear close to the laptop, can you confirm if the sound is coming from the left or the right side of the laptop?

Re: Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

Plesse keep in mind that I noticed the buzzing noise from the laptop after removing the HDD.

1. YES, I hear the sound regardless of what I am doing on the laptop.

2.No, not really that loud, can be heard from a normal sitting position in a silent enviroment. No, 30% volume sound is enough to mask the buzzing noise.

3.No, there is no sound when the laptop is switched off.

When I put my ear under the laptop, the sound comes from the center, bit to the right, (closer to the storage drive). and when I put my ear to both the front facing speakers, I could hear the buzzing static noise too, but bit quiter comapared to the sound from under the laptop.

Also, when I start a game, I could hear the AC adapter buzzing even more, maybe double the sound volume compared to not playing a game. I could not tell if the buzzing noise from the LAPTOP is increasing too, due to fan noise.

Re: Legion Y530 AC Adapter coil whine

This does sound like coil whine and honestly nothing can be done about it. It is NOT going to affect your laptop performance/life but can be annoying.

People have tried changing chargers, GPUs etc but the coil whine is a very weird issue that may or may not go away.

I hope that answers your question.
