Re: Legion Y530 Fan Control

Wow, my topic just keeps growing.

Pretty sad to see so many people having the same problems, one of the biggest topics on this forum but still no official reaction from Lenovo.

About the possible solution, I don't think this is helpful for everybody who doesn't understand the Russian language.

I tried to read it with google translation, but it's not very clear to me.

So I rather wait till there's an English explanation of all steps to take.

Yeah, more and more people are annoyed by this weird behaviour of the fans and as I posted the answer i got from lenovo  "......From the thousands who purchased the laptop, checking on the forums, it's just a small number(less than 50 for a guess) who are reporting that the fan is annoying them........"

I got my Y530 couple of days ago and I havent had much of any problem with anything except for the heating. When I play it does get very hot but then I guess that is common for any gaming laptop but I realised that even when I am not gaming the fans still run rarely for seconds and it is because of the summer, I strongly believe. In india, the temperature goes up to 35-40 degree celcius easily after march(which is now). So the normal, default fan is definitely not gonna keep it cool. And the heavy summer has not even started yet. Can't imagine how hot it is going to get in a couple of months. So i am assuming that is is nothing to worry about.

Hi all,

I wrote two weeks ago an email to Lenovo. They responded next day and wanted from me to send them the laptop, so I did. A week after I got it back with the note that the fans were replaced. I said OK... maybe it was the problem... who knows. I turned on when on battery and seemed like before... They also send me this link https://support.lenovo.com/at/en/downloads/ds503661 to install the driver. I installed it and after that I shut down the laptop (low battery). When I was at home, I power it on... **bleep** the fans were spinning with 100% for few minutes. Can you imagine 95C on boot?, the same temp when opening google chrome ??? Now is even worse, MUCH WORSE... I wrote them back two days ago, but still no answer. I don`t know how to uninstall the driver, even if he is the problem. But thermal throttling on google chrome... yeah have fun with that.

You can see the start temps and after that the opening of Chrome...

UPDATE: I just talked with them again. I will send the laptop again for repair.

wow that is crazy... thermal throttling on Chrome...

I've spent over $20CAD on this problem already, buying the Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste, then the arctic MX-4 because I heard that was better for laptops.  Neither made any real, noticeable difference.  I am still 45c-55c on IDLE, just website browsing, etc.  I have a uneven heatsink so I can have 10c difference between cores.  Fans spin whenever CPU is over 50c.

I can make my CPU thermal throttle WITHIN 10 seconds using the CPU burner on furmark (keep in mind this isnt even the most intensive CPU stresser out there).  I have repasted with MC4 and undervolted -125mv using throttleStop (the most my CPU can take).

My last step before I request heatpipe replacement from Lenovo is to use liquid metal.  Has anyone tried using thermal grizzly liquid metal on the Y530?

please, report how' liquid metal worked for You, because i have even more difference  on cores (20C) and lenovo service says it's fine. It has passed their cpu/temperature test.

Please, make photo cooling system CPU/GPUs place. I'm thinking try Grizzly pad minus 8 https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/products/13-minus-pad-8-en

May be problem with uneven surface.

liquid metal will form an alloy with copper pad and thermal conductivity will degrade in a few month time. Unless you are ready to replace heatpipe assembly once a while I would not recommend you applying liquid metal thermal interfaces in your notebook.

You mean to use grizzly pad minus 8 (thermal pad) instead of thermal paste on cpu?

No he is talking about liquid metal. Thermal pads and thermal grease are completely fine. By the way thermal pads are not so good compared to thermal grease.
