Legion Y530 Manuals and GPU info

2018-06-19, 21:07 PM

The Lenovo Support site now recognizes the Y530 notebook. And you can find the User Guide there, as well as the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

As I was going through the specs of the Y530 initially, I found it strange that it was only offered with the GTX 1050 (Ti) card. Well, the Hardware Maintenance Manual gives us a little peek into the future. If you take a look at the "Graphic memory chip" spec in there, you can find a reference to the GTX 1160. So probably whenever NVIDIA officially announces the next gen GTX cards, these new Legions will ship with those.

I would guess this was left in the HMM by mistake? Probably Lenovo cannot commit to using NVIDIA cards that have not been announced yet :)

I would guess that the most likely scenario is that a placeholder was left in. However, there is a chance that those GPUs may be announced at nvidia's event on the 20th of August.

You'd be surprised how much earlier stuff happens behind the scenes. Those kinds of things don't just happen overnight. They are being designed and worked on for months before the release. There's probably already a fully funcitonal Y530 with next gen graphics being tested as we speak. They do need to have warehouses ready to ship on the release date, right?

Each notebook model usually takes about 1.5 years to design. Or more.

This means that if you see the Legion Y530 announced in June 2018, they already started thinking and designing it the end of 2016. Since the HMM indicates they planned for the next gen GPUs, they probably knew about them already at that time.
