Re: Legion Y540 2060RTX Fan noise
I just received my 17 Inch Legion Y540 Laptop, with RTX2060.
My only complain is the fan noise at load. Is there a way to solve this?
It sounds like a jet engine at medium graphics load.

Hi guys.
I encounter same issue with Y520 15 IKBM.
Here the laptop specs : I5 7300, 1060 GTX, 8Go RAM
Noise become loud when doing small operation like browsing or using application which don't require lot of ressources.
What I found is that lot of gaming laptops have the same issue but worse is that Lenovo ones don't provide fans control. If you search "Lenovo fan noise" on Google or this forum, you'll find lot of topics dealing with it. But it happens with Asus ROG, MSI as well.
The fact is, either laptop needs to be clean (due to dust prevent fan to work well) or it's set like that by Lenovo and we can't do anything... I found that if you change CPU maximum utilization and turn cool control into passive it works a bit better but the problem isn't fix. You should have a look at temp and cpu utilization. Maybe the turbo mode is working and it can trigger fan to increase speed.
Are you new to gaming laptops? Coz the y540 fan noise is 49db while Helios 300 is 58db on Max load. 49 dB is pretty good for current gaming laptops. U can use balanced thermal mode in vantage app and elevate the rear of laptop for better airflow.

Nope not new to gaming laptops. I've had Asus and dells not as loud.
No fan control is a drawback in this so one can control speed for less noise. Acer, Asus,MSI have fan control option. But 8750 onwards has been difficult to control CPU temperature so everyone is maxing fans out
Too bad! I guess I can manage with turning he sound up or putting headphones on.

Same here, with my brand new Y540 (i7 + 1660ti). It's pretty quiet during normal use, and no crazy fan spinning, but it gets very loud with any game... I hope they will fix it via software. A better tuning of the Profiles in the Lenovo Vantage app is needed. So that Performance = loud and powerful, Quiet = silent and power limited (would be still ok with many games).
Hi all,
you can actually change the thermal behavior of the machine via the shortcut FN+Q on the gaming machines. It allows three modes, where the quiet / colder one limits the TDP of the CPU/GPU.
We have checked the fan noise on both Y540 and Y740 and even though some might perceive it as loud, it is as designed and as was intended (as far as there is no rattling or irregular sound coming from the fans). Both machines can get loud when under full load while playing demanding games, but I'd definitely consider them both an improvement over their predecessors Y530 and Y730.
Best regards,
Juraj

Hello. Thanks for your reply.
What I meant is that the quiet mode isn't that quiet. And actually it often gets as loud as the other 2 modes. I wish the imposed limits were stricter in that mode (like reducing also the max fan speed and clock speeds or letting thermal throttling to intervene) , and one could decide to switch to balance or performance in case needed.
And it would be nice to get the possibility to boost the fans at max speed also. In order to improve cooling under heavy combined loads.
And last but not least, I would also love the option to block the FN mode in the bios. I think it is called "HotKey Mode", and it's missing.
Greetings
Fabio
Does this funcition (FN+Q) replace extreme cooling from lenovo nerve center? I've downloaded Nerve Center and it seems to be missing two options, including extreme cooling. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, no luck there.
