Legion Y540 Screen Flickering

2021-06-29, 16:39 PM

I’ve had this computer for just over a year. Made it through a deployment and back with no issues. Now all of a sudden my screen flickers and if it goes into sleep mode I have to do a hard restart just to get my screen to come on again. I don’t have enough computer knowledge to troubleshoot it beyond what the self service driver updates and diagnostics had me do. Anyone know if this is a software issue or am I going to need repairs?

Hello @11jonesj,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Kindly try uninstalling the display drivers of the machine either through the device manager or using a utility like DDU.

After that please install the drivers from the support page.

You can download it using this link (please note that you may have to enter your serial number in order to get the right file): https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y540-15irh/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Graphics%20Processing%20Units%20%28GPU%29

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Jack_Lenovo1

Re:Legion Y540 Screen Flickering

Yesterday, my Windows 10 automatically instralled "NVIDIA - Display - 27.21.14.5749" driver on my Legion Y540. I had no option to suspend this installation! Now after the update with reboot, the screen is flickering from time to time. It's very annyoing that one cannot stop such installation of drivers which destroy the functionality!

Please give detailed advice how to proceed to bring back a screen without flickering.

In your supposed download page there is only exactly the current nvidia driver version (27.21.14.5749), which was automatically installed yesterday and with this version the screen flickering starts. So, what to do now?

I finally managed to solve the screen flickering problem coming with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 driver update (version 457.49) on my Lenovo Legion Y540-17IRH-PG0 Laptop by the following steps:

  1. Uninstall the NVDIA Graphics driver completely via Control panel -> programs and features -> de-install “NVDIA GeForce driver“, Version 457.49 (27.21.14.5749). -> Graphics resolution may switch temporarily to a standard resolution.
  2. Re-start the computer.
  3. Graphics driver automatically switched to the original installed version 442.23 (26.21.14.4223)
  4. Load and start the tool „hide windows update“ (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/where-do-you-download-wushowhidediagcab/c53dc53c-a413-42ef-b2cc-0a587f421a93) to hide the NVIDIA driver update 457.49, such that it will not be re-installed next time.
