Legion Y540 VERY Slow(GTX 1660 TI, 16GbRAM)

2020-05-15, 13:03 PM

I used to be able to run all my games at ultra, now I cannot run most of them even on low settings. It should also be noted that the fan has not been nearly as loud or active as usual when I try to run games. Additionally, I have also set the machine to performance mode in the Vantage settings.

Things that I have tried:

-many, many restarts

-All windows 10 and lenovo vantage updates

-antivirus scan

-driver updates(from lenovo.com)

-removed some unnecessary background tasks

-start-up programs are very limited

-Ran Defrag and optimized both drives

My machine is a Legion Y540 with the GTX 1660 Ti, 16gb ram, with 1TB HDD and 256gbSSD. My games are all installed on my HDD, but this has never led to any performance issues in the past. I have used the laptop for high end gaming for the past 10 months, and my games have never run this poorly. Games such as COD Warzone are unplayable, they just crash. Any help or expertise would  be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating having a gaming machine on the outside but a potato on the inside for some reason. Initially I thought it was a software issue but after all my failed trouble shooting attempts I am beginning to think that maybe it is hardware? Although I don't know enough about that to make any educated guesses.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Dillon B

Could you try installing one of the games having performance issues on the SSD and trying it out? I know games take a metric ton of disk space, but I want to rule out the possibility that the HDD is failing.

Thank you for the suggestion, I installed a game that was abnormally slow to the SSD, and unfortunately the game responded and looked the same as on the HDD.

I am more than willing to try any other trouble shooting methods or ideas you have, and I appreciate the thought!

-It should be noted that after installation I did double check to confirm it was installed on the SSD

-Thank you, Dillon B

UPDATE

I made no knew changes to my laptop, I just did not touch it all day on may 16th, and then I attempted to play games on the 17th, and it worked perfect again for two days. However today it is back to its previous, VERY slow state. I find it very weird how it could run perfectly for two days and then be broken again today, but hopefully this will help someone take a better guess at the problem.

Thank you!
