Legion Y720, Poor Wifi performance

2017-09-01, 1:51 AM
Hi everyone,

I'm having serious issues with my Legion Y720, my wireless card is acting strangely, it's like I'm constantly losing performance and conectivity. Putting this simply and throwing out some examples, when I try to play Overwatch for instance I see everyone "jumping" around and my character constantly stutters. Web pages sometimes takes minutes to load and Youtube videos suddenly stop loading for no reason at all.

It cannot be my router's fault, I've tried the same scenarios and games with another laptop.
I've tried changing my router's frequency just in case, from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz.
I did a clean Windows installation, with and without Lenovo's Drivers.
I tried changing the Wireless Settings (within Windows Power Plan) to Maximum Performance.

I'm getting really frustrated because I have no chance to return the laptop, I bought it while on vacation and hadn't much time for "extensive" tests.

Hello Vahnkaiser

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Try to download the WiFi and Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Hi vahnkaiser

To be honest I have come to realize that Y720's wifi performance is spotty at best BUT not as bad as your case.

(I have a 100Mbps connection and still Y720 only gets about 16-20Mbps on Wifi, my other devices can reach upto 45-50 on Wifi)

1) Can you please try using a wired connection and see if you get some stability?

2) Can you please run a speedtest (speedtest.net) on WiFi and wired connection?

(Post result screenshots here)

3) After the results, do you feel comfortable opening up the laptop and taking a look inside? (Maybe the Wifi card wires are loose)

Let me know. Thanks.

Hi

To sum up, the connection problems are gone once I connect it by cable.

But even though while I'm connected through the cable the problems mentioned above are gone I must admit that the gaming performance isn't as smooth as it should be. My previous laptop which was an Ideapad Y700-15ISK was definitely much better. I can tell the difference because I play a lot of First Person Shooters and even the slightest drop in internet performance is noticeable to me.

I'll do as you said and take a look inside and I'll come back to you in a moment.

There is no need to look inside the laptop as it looks like the Wifi is working at pretty good speeds and the ping is good as well.

If you have the Nerve Sense software, in that there is an option called Network priority. Try toggling it on or off and play with each setting, see if there is a difference.

Maybe it is just THAT game. Have you tried other games?

EDIT -

In Intel Options also there are power options, try turning power saving off there.

Hello again

this could be avoided if all the units were closely super visioned while being manufactured or something... Once the consumer gets the product it doesn't matter if it's faulty or not, it doesn't matter at all at that point.

Honestly, I have not played these multiplayer games for a while now so if there is lag it is probably being experienced during actual gameplay.

I was watching the stats on top left of the video and the fps and ping stay pretty stable throughout.

Looking at all the earlier stats and the stats in this video, I am not sure what the issue is. (Chrome stopping video playback is understandable and does sound like something big)

Do you think if you try playing on an external monitor, the issue is still there?

Maybe this is a GPU issue, try turning down some graphical settings?

You have already tried resetting windows as well, so at this point I really don't see many options. :(

I do not believe that running on an external monitor would change a thing, because when I'm connected through cable directly to the Modem the problem is (at least it looks like so) gone.

Anyway I've tried to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers using DDU and running the tests again, including playing Overwatch with the Intel Integrated Graphics Chip, but with no success.

What else could be interfering with the WiFi or Wireless Card Drivers? I honestly don't know...

Note: I'm just keeping a note here of what I've tried already.

- Tried to update to Intel's latest Drivers but with no success, it just got worse.

- Tried messing around with the adapter's advanced properties

I'm running out of options here. I'm seriously thinking about buying a new Wireless Card as it may be cheaper and easier to me than sending back the laptop to the store again.

My only problem is knowing if the BIOS accepts other Wireless Cards and which ones are compatible...

I was thinking of upgrading to one of self called "Killer" wireless cards as they seem to be good.
