Legion y740 - Window on PCIe SSD and ubuntu on SATA SSD - possible?

2019-11-19, 8:51 AM

hi all

I bought a Lenovo legion y740 (Legion Y740-15IRHg).

It came with 1 TB of PCIe SSD and an empty SATA 2.5 inch drive port.

I need ubuntu for work purposes and windows for gaming. So I decided to insert a samsung evo SATA ssd and install ubunut on that.
but the ubuntu installer cannot recognise the ssd. I searhed the net but can't find my exact situation. I know it has something to do with my storage controller. My laptop is showing RST in BIOS and when I try to change it to AHCI (as suggested by forums online) it says all the dat will be wiped out.
So firstly I wanted to know is it even possible to run 2 different SSDs. If yes then  how can I do it without deleting my windows.
How to change the controller from RST to AHCI without wiping my data.

Hi sunnysinghtanwa!

Welcome to the Community Forums!

Yes, you are correcty with the Sata Controller needs to be changed to AHCI in order for you to install Ubuntu on your SATA SSD. You are also correct that the Windows OS on the PCIE SSD will be deleted. In order for it to work, you need to re-install the Operating System (Windows) on the PCIe SSD for you to have dual boot on AHCI mode.

You may use cloning applications as suggestion or create a backup on to your important data.

I have a new Lenovo Y740 with 1TB ssd set to rst, after intensite research over the web I came upon a tutorial that explains exactly how to do this, I don't know if you still need this but I hope any other person with the same problem can solve with this: http://triplescomputers.com/blog/uncategorized/solution-switch-windows-10-from-raidide-to-ahci-operation/

the tutorial will walk you through how to change the ssd to AHCI mode in the bios without having to format or reinstall windows, and after that you can install ubuntu normally as you will do.

Good luck and Happy Linux =D
