Re: Legion y740 enabling G-Sync

I'm not talking about adaptive vsync.  I'm talking about VESA adaptive sync, which is what gsync in laptops is, there's almost no laptops with hardware based gsync, save for a few Clevo ODM laptops that are desktop replacements and weigh 8+ lbs.

Adaptive vsync just turns vsync off if you can't reach the target refresh rate,. VESA adaptive sync (the same as freesync over display port, and the same as laptop freesync and gsync, HDMI freesync and Nvidia hardware based gsync (in desktop monitors) are proprietary tech) is where the screen refresh rate changes as the game frames per second changes, reducing tearing to zero while inside the variable refresh rate min-max range.

Add me to the list of people that thought the 1660 ti model had GSYNC.  This is false advertising if it doesn't support GSYNC as the website still advertises the 81UF0000US as having a GSYNC display.  Was there any resolution to this?

You can take the y740 back and demand a full refund.

Re: Legion y740 enabling G-Sync

Thanks but I already realize that is an option.

The GPU and Screen both support GSYNC so either they didn't include the module or they screwed up the drivers and firmware. I'd prefer to hear from Lenovo Support before returning.

Edit:  After searching more I guess laptops don't require a GSYNC module so if the Display and GPU support it we should be able to have a software fix, although I believe the discrete GPU has to be wired to the display directly and not run through the Intel GPU.  I find it unlikely they would have a different motherboard on the 1660ti models but there must be a reason for the lack of support.  The laptop is perfect otherwise so I would hope this gets resolved.

The laptop has a mux switch (accessable via Lenovo vantage/bios) so discrete gpu is directly connected to the display when in discrete graphics mode.  Seems like something's off either with the panel they used (needs to have adaptive sync support) or the vendor configuration or something is wrong in bios

Also they absolutely have a different motherboard since the gpu is bga (soldered on). Judging from bios updates, aside from the gpu used, the motherboard is otherwise nearly identical, but a misconfigured hardware ID could be breaking gsync and fixable with bios updates.

Thanks for the useful information. Hopefully this gets resolved as GSYNC on the built in display was one of the main reasons I went with the Y740. The display ID on mine is the same as the one on the RTX model from what I have seen on other forums so hopefully this can be fixed easily.

Returning the laptop and waiting for a sale on the 2060 model and then waiting  another week to a month for it to arrive is not an attractive option.

Re: Legion y740 enabling G-Sync

I worked with support last night and ran through a few driver reinstalls and confirmed with them that my laptop does not have a G-Sync option.  After making sure everything is up to date they linked me the specifications document at https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Lenovo%20Laptops/Lenovo_Legion_Y74015IRH?M=81UF0000US

stating that not all models support G-Sync.

I'm currently trying to exchange for a G-Sync model now since my order page clearly shows I purchased a G-Sync display with a 1660ti, hopefully this can get resolved.  Either way the order page for the 1660ti model is falsely advertising a G-Sync display that is not available at the current time.
