Lenovo Ideapad L340 17IRH 81LL , 17 INCH , MEMORY RAM QUERY , Please help

2021-02-21, 13:06 PM

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and just wondering if anyone can help it will be much appreciated as I've read alot of conflicting information about this issue.

I have recently purchased a 17 inch Lenovo Ideapad L340 - 17IRH 81LL laptop with the following spec;

2.4GHz 9th Generation intel core i5 9300H quad core
8GB DDR4 2666MHz (1 x 8GB)
256gb NVME SSD Hard drive
4GB Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB DDR5

I opened up the laptop when I first got it and it only has 1 x RAM slot. Before I purchased it I saw on the internet that my model of laptop has 1 x 4GB memory module soldered to the motherboard (none upgradable) and then 1 x RAM slot that is upgradable by the user.

On further inspection my laptop does NOT have a soldered RAM module on the motherboard, it only has 1 x RAM memory slot that can be upgraded by the user.

For now I have upgraded the 1 x 8GB RAM to 1 x 16gb 2400MHz RAM.... but I have seen on the internet and from other lenovo owners that my model can infact support 1 x 32GB RAM module (2666MHz or 2400MHz) so I just wanted to post the question on here and see what people would advise.

I even contacted lenovo support via the live chat feature and they didn't say 32gb WON'T work, they just said they 'only advise a maximum of 16gb ram' in my laptop (something to do with power usage, so I assume the 2666MHz will use more power than the 2400MHz? ) It just seems a bit silly that a 17 inch gaming laptop can apparently only have 16gb of ram in single channel mode.....

This is the RAM I'm looking at getting;

Any help/advice would be appreciated! :)

Re:Lenovo Ideapad L340 17IRH 81LL , 17 INCH , MEMORY RAM QUERY , Please help

Morning,

Just a quick update which will hopefully benefit people also looking for answers on the same question I was.

So as mentioned in my original post I purchased a Lenovo Ideapad L340-17IRH 81LL 17.3 inch laptop (specification is noted on this post somewhere) it came with 8GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM (1 x 8GB stick) I was told by many people that my laptop had 1 x 4GB soldered to the motherboard (not upgradeable) and 1 x 4GB that the user can upgrade.

Turns out my laptop DIDN'T have a soldered memory module on the motherboard, all it has is 1 memory slot that was apparently only upgradable to a maximum of 16gb (1 x 16gb) which I thought was rather silly and restricting for a 17 inch gaming laptop with a decent graphics card.

So I also found out that someone put 32GB ram in their L340 laptop ( 1 x 32GB) so I looked into this and asked the Lenovo customer support via live chat and they didn't say it WON'T work, they just said they only offer support upto 16 GB ram with my laptop (the advisor said its down to power usage of all the components)

Fast forward then... I bit the bullet and bought 1 x 32GB strip of DDR4 2666MHz sodimm viper steel series memory and it FULLY WORKS in my L340 17IRH laptop (I purchased this specific RAM because this is the same 32GB RAM that someone else put in their L340) But touching on the point about power usage - I would only recommend installing 32GB ram if you only have ONE hard drive, because if you have 2 hard drives installed and then install 1 x 32GB on top of that then the system won't have enough power and will affect the performance significantly. I'm led to believe 1 x 32GB RAM will only fully work in this laptop if you have just ONE hard drive installed (adding a 2nd hard drive will take up too much power from the laptop)

The link to the RAM is below. Also as many of you will be aware the 9th Generation intel i5 and i7 support upto 128gb RAM, so I don't think 1 x 32gb RAM will work in any lenovo laptops which are intel 8th generation or below.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Viper-Steel-DDR4-SODIMM-Single/dp/B086GBF8MF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1R5IJVE1M0K3V&dchild=1&keywords=viper%2Bsteel%2Bseries%2Bddr4%2B32gb%2B1%2Bx%2B32gb%2B2666mhz%2Bsodimm%2Bsingle&qid=1613902269&sprefix=1%2Bx%2B32gb%2B2666%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-1&th=1

Just one last thing; when I installed the new 32GB RAM into my laptop I switched it on and it came up with the Lenovo boot up screen straight away like usual, and then it went onto a dim black screen for about 20 seconds and then after that it displayed the windows login screen. It turns out that I had some windows updates pending that where waiting to be installed so after I installed the updates my laptop booted up within 15 seconds just like normal without the dim black screen for 20 seconds.

I've probably made this a lot longer than it needs to be lol, but hopefully the detail will help out other people.

P.S: the 32GB RAM is fully recognised within the BIOS and WINDOWS.

Welcome to the Community

You might have a look at this existing thread, which might answer your questions.

You might also include your MTM number as there are variations. It'll look like this: 81LL00AGUS. Do not post your serial number. If yours doesn't have any RAM soldered onto the board, then you have the one stick which is supported up to 16GB, but may work with more.

Good luck. :)

Many thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

I will have a look at the thread that you attached, and I will post the MTM number shortly as I'm not home at the moment.

Hopefully I can install 32gb RAM, everything I've seen is pointing towards it being possible. I'm going to order the stick of RAM off Amazon so fingers crossed

Thank you again :)
