Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05 Touchpad not working in any Linux

2020-08-26, 19:54 PM

Hello,

I recently bought Legion 5 15ARH05 laptop mainly for working with Linux.

I chose this model because I needed more cores for my workflow and the AMD processor had them than a similar Intel one.

I tried to install and set up Linux on the machine. But the touchpad of the laptop is not being recognized in Linux.

I tried different distros and different kernel versions (upto the latest kernel 5.8.0), with no luck. I suspect it as a driver issue.

By the way, the touchpad works fine in the preinstalled Windows on the machine.

But, I specifically need Linux for my workflow.

Any help is much appreciated.

Have you tried this?

a)  Does wired usb mouse work?

b)  Enter BIOS screens, set the button "restore factory BIOS settings"

c)  Set the button " Optimize for OS "

d)  save settings, exit bios.

e)  Re-enter bios, disable secure boot, save settings exit.

f)  find latest fedora workstation linux.  getfedora.org   use the live usb creation instructions on that page.  (Don't use rufus, don't use etcher, most likely a simple dd comand is recommended from within a linux.)

g)  Boot the Live USB for Fedora Workstation.  From that instance test touchpad, mouse, function keys, wifi, and so forth.

IF it does not work:

What desktop GUI are you using?

What graphics package does the GUI use?  I think most today do NOT use X windows, Xorg system by default.  Some still can be set to do that, read the manual pages.  If the GUI does not use Xorg, working with X windows functions to activate touchpad will not be very successful.  Read the man pages for the graphics package used to write your desktop GUI, and find how to communicate with the mouse, touchpad, touchscreen?

If you think you need a linux driver and the mfr has not written one, Cent OS has a way to utilize drivers from Microsoft Windows.  You have to install the driver file within Cent OS partition.  Check the manual pages under Cent OS.

Sincerely,

Usedtoberich

Hello Usedtoberich,

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, wired and wireless usb mouse work.

It's a newly bought . I've updated the BIOS to the latest version and loaded default settings.

I've already tried the latest stable Fedora release (kernel 5.6) and openSUSE Tumbleweed (with kernel 5.8.0-1).

For the graphics package I've tried wayland and xorg. My knowledge in these are rudimentary.

Actually it seems that there's no Linux driver available for this touchpad.

As I've read here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1887190

And I'm not an expert to port the Windows drivers to Linux. I wanted to use Fedora or Ubuntu or openSUSE as my daily driver rather than CentOS.

Would you please help.

You can get the backlight through nvidia kernel modules. Disable switchable graphics in BIOS, add acpi_backlight=video to your kernel boot parameters. Your xorg.conf should have brightness control enabled like this:

Section "Screen"

 Identifier "dGPU"

 Device "dGPU"

EndSection

Section "Device"

 Identifier "dGPU"

 Driver "nvidia"

 Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

EndSection

No luck with touchpad yet. The problem is, touchpad shows as multi device, none of them responding to i2c_hid module. If you disable hid_multitouch, touchpad works, but it is unusable.

I understand linux is not priority for their gaming lineup, but at least they could try not to make more hurdles.

If lenovo is reading this, please get your act together, how difficult is to transfer knowledge from thinkpad to other lineups, huh?

I'm also joining the discussion and urge lenovo techs to port windows drivers for this device to linux, since many people spends a few bucks extra to buy lenovo laptops because it used to be one of the few OEMs that certify their laptops for linux (yeah, legion is not thinkpad, but afaik new AMD thinkpads and legion hardware, apart from the dGPU and fingerprint scanner aren't too different). on windows this touchpad uses windows precision i2c_hid driver. it shouldn't too difficult for a tech giant to port it and it would make its customers happy.

happy customer = returning cusomer

unhappy customer = last time he buys a lenovo product

P.S to lenovo tech support. I suggest you start by reading this post, at least you see the effort 'unpaid' people are doing fixing something you should have done right:
