Lenovo Legion Y520 + Plextor P8PE

2017-04-15, 14:44 PM

Hello everyone,

I've just bought my Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop along with an additional Plextor 128GB P8PE M.2 NVMe SSD. The problem is, neither BIOS nor Windows 10 which I have just installed does not detect my SSD. Tried some tricks with the BIOS settings, tried deinstalling the SSD physically and installing back again and updating the BIOS but it wouln't let me, saying that I do have the latest BIOS version in fact. The Plextor SSD is not there anywhere and I am wondering what else can I do to fight this problem off, before deciding that the SSD itself could be faulty and has to be replaced. Also, I am positive that this particular model of the SSD is compatible with my Y520. Any tips on that?

As I understand it, the only M.2 SSDs that are guaranteed  to work in the Y520 are the SSDs that are listed in the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" (HMM) for the Y520.  To download this manual, scroll to the bottom of this page and click "Manuals" in the "Support" column.

Other SSDs may  work in the Y520, but there is no guarantee that they will.  If the BIOS does not detect the presence of the SSD, the SSD may be faulty, or it may be one that does not work in the Y520.  If the SSD works OK in other laptops, there is nothing that you can do to make the Y520 BIOS see the SSD.  You would need to return or sell the Plextor, and purchase a different model of SSD.

Thanks for your reply. I was instructed by my retailer that said SSD should work fine as long as it operates on the NVMe interface. I have already ordered another Plextor that is going to arrive after the easter to see if it's really a matter of the SSD (unfortunately I have no other laptop to test it on). Also, I believe that I have seen a topic somewhere here on the forum, concerning installing Plextor P8PE on Lenovo Y520 and it did work eventually, so hopefully it's not a matter of whitelisted devices. In case it is, I still have 14 days to return in to my retailer, though I'd really wish it wasn't, cause Plextor has got some nice speeds unlike other SSDs at that price. Anyway, should anyone have any more info on that, I'd appreciate any help.

For anyone interested in the topic:
I did test another Plextor on my laptop, which obviously did not work either. The only option left was te issue of compatibility or a faulty M2 slot on the motherboard. I swapped the laptop today, installed my Plextor once again and this time it works like a charm. Bios sees it without any necesarry setting changes. So if you are wondering about the compatibility, I say as long as the standard of the PCI NVMe is there, your SSD should work properly. If it doesn't, consider replacing your laptop.
