Lenovo Legion Y520 Starts Stuttering and Buzzing

2017-11-27, 13:59 PM

I just bought this laptop 2 weeks ago and everything was going great. I can multitask multiple chrome tabs and stream videos on the different tabs as well. I can even play games without having it to lag and microstutter. Recently, it has been stuttering and it's getting more noticeable. Even opening different chrome tabs makes it hard to manage.

Even playing games has become a pain. Before I could 40-50 fps no problem. Now it stutters and even at one point outright lagged on me. I had to hard restart the machine.

Is this a RAM issue? Software issue? Anything would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Specs:

i7-7700hq

4 gb RAM

Nvidia GTX 1050

Hi ,

Welcome to the Community,

What power setting do you have on the machine? Is it set to Performance?

Also, do you notice this stuttering during particularly demanding parts of a game?

Hi Miguel,

It's already set to High Performance. The thing is this didn't happen before. I could run a game with a browser open. Most of the time I have Steam open to update games and at the same time play a game. Also, alt+tabbing between game and windows now makes the game lag so hard.

I'm thinking is this a RAM issue? But if so, this problem did not happen before. I have updated nvidia drivers as well. Do I need Windows updates?

I have tried all possible updates and it still happens. Alt+tabbing between games and windows causes everything to lag. Is it a driver problem or something? This started happening when Windows started doing a system update. I checked Task Manager while playing  a game and the Memory is at 80% at most. CPU usage not that much going on.

Hello

Just an update. It is starting to outright lag on everything. Opening Chrome, starting a program, etc. I am terribly frustrated with this laptop and very disappointed. The first week had no problems at all and this suddenly happens. It's even slower than my older 5 year old laptop. Please help I am desperate for answers.

These laptops require a plugged in charger to run their best, so make sure it's plugged in when your gaming, otherwise FPS drops and stutters will be very common. Moreover, open task manager and see if any unimportant programs are running. I also suggest getting CCleaner to clean out the gunk in the laptop where it'll usually build up to several gigabytes and slow down performance. Moreover, try unplugging your computer and taking out the battery ( If you can't remove the battery just let the battery drain ), and then press the power button for a minute. Then reboot and see if performance improves. Let me know what happens.

i always plug in my laptop when i'm using it for heavy stuff. i have installed ccleaner and did the cleaning. no increase in performance whatsoever. also wouldn't allowing the battery to drain damage the battery? the performance is getting so slow now that even basic browsing is making my laptop lag like crazy and it didn't happen before.

Sorry to reply late, didn't get any notifications. Draining the battery will not damage it, in fact, keeping it charged constantly will shorten it's lifespan. You should let your computer sit and let the battery drain. Make sure temperatures are nice and cool, otherwise using the "extreme cooling" feature will be handy now. Decreased speeds like this can often come from virsuses and normal computer gunk. Installing software means they most likely open things up on startup as well.

Get Malwarebytes to check for any viruses. Make sure to get CCleaner to clean out your computer and check for registry problems. Type into the start menu "MSCONFIG" and click enter. Then go to the services tab and uncheck anything that isn't important ( Things that aren't Lenovo/Intel/Microsoft should be considered ).

Otherwise, a factory reset may be in order.
