Bought the y520 a few days ago, and sometimes it seems to just decide not to run well, other times it runs quite impressively. Every game I want to play I´ve set to the nvidia card in the nvidia control panel, I´ve set the energy options to max performance. When it runs bad, the fan will barely be on and the laptop cool, so there´s definitely something just sometimes hindering it from going all out. Suggestions and advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.
Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.
(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal
Also, does the unit get hot when this is occuring at all?
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Are you playing all games when connected to charger (power adapter) or battery?
When it runs bad, can you please give an example of a game. Also, use MSI Afterburner and CPUID HWMonitor to check the GPU and CPU usage and clocks.
Are there specific games that run bad?
Are you playing on a desk?
Have you made any modifications to the laptop?
