Lenovo Legion Y520 freezing (Windows 10, 256GB + 1TB, 8GB DDR4, i7, 1050 Ti)

2017-06-05, 10:36 AM

Here is the story:

I've bought Lenovo Legion Y520 (256GB + 1TB, i7, 1050 Ti) and after 1 month it start freezing time to time (Windows 10). Screen goes black, fans are still working, keyboard light working, even sound could play, but screen is still black (or with some still image) and it don't react to a keyboard or mouse. There are three ways to make it alive again:

- Turn it off by pressing Power for 8 seconds and then turn it on (too hardcore)

- Close the laptop and open it again (so it goes to sleep and wake up as it should)

- And, what is more important I can plug power cable out and then in... and it will wake PC up again

The last thing make me think that it is not a complete freezing, just some sort of sleeping. And if it happend once, it could appear again with much higher chances, if I will not reboot the machine. If I reboot it, it will return in 2-4 days, if not - in the same day. When I've had less empty space on HDD, it appeared more often.

What I've done already? A lot!

- Tried differend driver versions (latest drivers make this problem rare, but didn't fix it).

- Tried sfc /scannow and other built-in tools to check the system

- Tried memtest, tried HDD test to check what is wrong

- Setted HDD sleep option to 360 minutes (laptop must went sleep before this, but instead it freeze time to time)

- Deleted extra files (HDD was filled to 67%, now about 40% and it made the error occurs less often)

- Updated Bios (I've had previous version from the box)

- More and more (like 100 ideas of fixing it, nothing worked)

I have concerms about bad Ramaxel DDR4 memory (because Ramaxel - is junky, and shame on you Lenovo, that you use it in a gaming device). What can I do now? Another idea is about HDD (because more HDD I use, more often this bug occurs).

Usually Lenovo uses Samsung or Hynix RAM in their laptops. Did you buy this from a 3rd party reseller? Was the laptop sealed when you bought it? (There is a lenovo seal on the box).

I also think this is a RAM problem, however one option you can try it restoring windows to factory setting and delete all existing data. (You can take a backup on external drive if you have important pictures, videos).

Resetting to factory will ensure whether there is a hardware problem or not.

Yes, it was sealed by Lenovo and 100% new. I'm just currently living in Bulgaria, guess they have some cheap hardware for eastern Europe. But don't get me wrong, it is still very bad idea to use Ramaxel for any country (and I've google for this, Lenovo doing this time to time, when they need lots of memory fast, like with this very popular model).

Reinstalling Windows will not help in this case, so it is or RAM or HDD for sure, but will I loose warrinty, if I'll open it to change RAM to normal 2x8 DDR4 kit?

If you are sure it is the RAM, then you can try replacing it.

You can follow the Hardware maintenance manual (HMM) to open the laptop. As long as you don't damage anything while opening and replacing the warranty should remain intact.

I just opened my Y720 last night to check on the RAM and do some tests and it was fairly easy (I would say on a scale of 5, I am 3.5 in terms of such things).

Make sure you remove the -

1) Back cover

2) Battery Pack

before proceeding to remove the RAM cover and inserting new RAM.

The back cover needs to be lifted up from the bottom side before it comes off. It will take some effort (power) for the first time. Here is the HMM -

Hello, did you resolve the issue?

I have the same exact problem with i5 + 256GB.
