Lenovo Legion Y540 RAM Upgrade

2020-09-19, 10:15 AM

Hello,

I want to upgrade my laptop's RAM to 16 GB (or maybe 32 GB).

My question is that what kind of RAM(s) do you preffer for this laptop (brand, modell, etc...)?

Will it be better if I replace the old 8 GB RAM to a 2x8 GB kit or just enough to buy 1x8GB more and place it beside the factory RAM?

I want to use it for gaming and for AutoCAD.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

According to the specs, you can have up to 32GB of standard 2666MHz DDR4, dual-channel capable SO-DIMM. The increase in performance with dual-channel is very small so I wouldn't worry about that and either add 1 8GB  module or replace the existing module with 2 16GB.

Whether you really need 32GB depends on the software you intend to run. I would check with the games software makers and AutoCAD to see what they recommend. If your budget allows for 32GB the that's probably what I would get in order not to have to do another RAM upgrade again in the future.

Thank you so much for your answer!

Then I will buy only one more 8 GB RAM stick and check how it's working because I don't think that I can run that much softwares to take advantage of 32 GBs.

Do you know any good RAM brand and/or model for laptops?

Thanks in advance!

I stick with name brands like Crucial and Samsung from reputable retailers, not only because they're more reliable, but it's also easier to return/exchange if something isn't compatible or doesn't work. Avoid generic and "value" brands.
