Lenovo Legion Y720 Ram Upgrade

2017-11-22, 15:39 PM

Hello, I know there are other posts regarding this, but unfortunately I was unable to find what I need.

I am looking to upgrade my ram, I currently have one 8gb module that came with the laptop.

I am wondering if I can install a compatible 16gb module in he second bay without an issue.  As long as it is the same speed.

Thank you.

Yes, you can use different size of RAM in each slots but in order to achieve dual configuration memory in each module should be similar in terms of size, frequency and other specifications.

And yes it should work with 8GB+16GB=24GB configuration aswell.

Hi A1TX,

Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

By looking at the psref of this model does support 32GB max / DDR4 2400MHz, two SO-DIMM sockets

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

I know the limit can go up to 32gb, but is it okay for the number of GB of ram in each bay to be different? i.e. 8 in one and 16 in the other.

Yes, different capacities of RAM is fine as long as you make sure the latency, frequency and the channel.

If you specifically can post a hardware detail of your current RAM and the one you are planning to buy, then I can compare and check for you.

To get the installed RAM detailed specs, you can use a software like HWInfo.

Re: Lenovo Legion Y720 Ram Upgrade

2018-06-07, 0:16 AM

Hey, I've been reading all over the forum but I can't get my answer.

Could you please tell me if I can REPLACE (Not add) the currently installed RAM (1 - 8GB stick CAS 17, 2400) with a new pair (identical sticks)  which have different specs (different from the original)? E.g.

2x8GB:

CAS 15, 2400MHZ

CAS 17, 2666MHZ

CAS 15,  2666MHZ

Basically the questions being:

Can the CAS be below 17?

Can the speed exceed 2400?

Can both the above be true?

Thanks in advance! ?

Although I believe you can install 2666 mhz ram, your processor will only run the ram at 2400mhz (so no reason to spend more to get faster).

As for CAS latency, I've seen it as low as 14 (although I have no idea for laptops), so it's possible, but in real world applications there isn't a huge benefit (atleast not cost effective), and I don't know if there can be bottlenecks on this like the speed as mentioned above.

Generally speaking, higher speeds and lower latencies are more expensive/less available, and there is a limit, but again you're limited to 2400mhz by the processor anyway so you really only need to look at the CAS latency (if it matters to you that much).

It's weird that at the psref it shows that Y720 does support up to 2400MHz. But my 80VR00H9LT has Ramaxel RMSA3260MH78HAF-2666 8 GB module. I mean this module is inserted by Lenovo, i haven't changed anything. :smileyvery-happy:

Huh, it's possibly just a cost thing, sometimes its cheaper to buy faster speed ram modules than slower ones (older/slower ones might be out of production, but like I said generally slower is cheaper), regardless like you saw your ram is running at 2400 mhz.  If you want to buy more 2666 mhz so that you could potentially move it to a more modern laptop in the future, it is an option, otherwise, there's no benefit to having it.

Y720 RAM upgrade (16+4GB possible?)

2019-01-22, 20:34 PM

Hello,

I'm thinking of upgading my RAM before the big games of this year. I have the 8GB (4+4) edition of Y720.

My first question is if those 8 GB are slowing down my potencial performance in games because for me it seems that it does and 8GB is not enought to go with i7-7700HQ and 1060 3GB. I'm planning to play Metro: Exodus and they recomend 16GB. And I suppose all the games in the future will want 16GB as well.

My second question is, when I'm upgrading is it possible that I would keep one of the 4GB (since it is a 2 slot) and pair it up with a 16GB? Or should i go with a whole new kit of 8+8GB?

And my last question is what specific RAM should I buy? I'll pair up this post with a screen of my RAMs so you can see all the specs.

Thank you and I'm sorry for my english if i made any mistakes.
