Lenovo Legion Y720 upgrading SSD

2018-02-08, 17:48 PM

Hello, I would like to upgrade the SSD on my Lenovo legion Y720. I would like to know if there are 2 m.2 slots or if there is just 1. I tried researching to find out but i didnt find anything. I have a current 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD but my 120gb ssd is filled and cant put anything else on it. I would like to improve my SSD capacity to store my games on it for fast boot up times. What are the compatible SSD's with this laptop and if there is only 1 m.2 slot how would i take my windows key from this SSD and put it in the other ? Thanks for the help.

Hi Zawe,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

Looking at the Removal steps of solid state disk and hard disk drive from HMM, page 37 system only have one SSD and one HDD slots.

Following SSDs are compatible with your system according to Lenovo parts list, page 64

And AFAS Operating System licensed is concerned it is stored in Microsoft Servers, once you'll install the correct edition of Windows it will get activated through Digital entitlement

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

You have single m.2 2280 and single 2.5" SATA3 7mm ports. In order to utilize more space, you can either replace SSD to bigger one or HDD for another SSD. Lenovo verified follwing SSD m.2 2280 to be compatible:

- SSD, PM961 MZVLW256HEHP PCIE 256G SSD, PN: 5SD0L73444.
- SSD, 256 Toshiba XG4 256G M.2 2280 PCIe-NVMe THNSN5256GPUK, PN: 5SD0M56299.
- SSD, HFS256GD9MND-5510A M.2 256G SSD, PN: 5SD0L56326.
- SSD, PM961 MZVLW512HMJP PCIE 512G SSD, PN: 5SD0L73443.
- SSD, 512 Toshiba XG4 512G M.2 2280 PCIe-NVMe THNSN5512GPUK, PN: 5SD0M56300.
- SSD, HFS512GD9MND-5510A M.2 512G SSD, PN: 5SD0L56325.
- SSD, Samsung MZVLW1T0HMLH-000L2 PCIe M.2 1TB SSD, PN: 5SD0L07883.

You can also look for other m.2 2280 SSD's on the market. Samsung 960 EVO is usually the right choice.

Alternatively, you can replace your HDD for SSD. Regarding a good model, look for a Samsung 850 EVO.

After replacing your m.2 disk, you won't have any problem with Windows activation. Moreover, you can also prepare a recovery media from your current m.2 disk.

I don't know, if there's anything written. Basically, you need to use some imagining application e.g. Macrium Reflect, create a bootable USB flash drive with Macrium, boot device from it, create SSD image (store the image on other disk), swap disks, once again boot Macrium Reflect from USB and deploy the image on new SSD. Afterwards, you can use e.g. build-in Windows feature - Computer Management to resize your OS partition.

A - It's embedded inside BIOS, so you don't need to worry about it.

B - All steps are described there.

ok so i know this is an old post but i have some questions.

I recently replaced the original m.2 storage drive with a samsung evo 970 plus.

I had to restart my computer because i wasnt seeing any improvements.  Well what happend was it didnt recocginze the 970 so it made the old western digital the primary for all of the OS.   How can i fix this? Is there a way were i can swap this?
