Lenovo Legion Y720 with external Gaming Monitor

2017-09-23, 8:13 AM

Hey guys,

I'm planning on buying a second monitor and I would just like to know what features will I be able to use with the monitor that I'll be getting for example:

If I get a 120hz monitor, will the Lenovo Legion Y720 be able to handle that? (therefore, I'll see improvements)
... G-Sync, Higher-Resolution, etc

What features in a monitor will the Y720 be able to handle? If you can also suggest a budget monitor, that'd be really helpful. Mainly, I'm after for a higher refresh rate.

Help please :) thank you!

According to product specifications, the Y720 has USB-C, DisplayPort 1.2, and HDMI 2.0 for output capability.

So using these charts as reference (from wiki), the laptop will support up to 1440p at a high refresh rate like 144hz or if you prefer high resolution, it will support up to 4K at 60-75hz. All the 10-Series Nvidia GPUs support G-Sync, but G-Sync monitors cost a lot more. You can browse online on deal sites for monitor sales.

Hi woodpeckers!

Firstly, to see if you support any features, you have to look at the HDMI port. I don't know, but being a good laptop it should have HDMI 2.0. So you have limited features:

  • Enables transmission of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video
  • Bandwidth up to 18Gbps
  • 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution
  • Up to 32 audio channels for a multi-dimensional immersive audio experience
  • Up to 1536kHz audio sample frequency for the highest audio fidelity
  • Simultaneous delivery of dual video streams to multiple users on the same screen
  • Simultaneous delivery of multi-stream audio to multiple users (Up to 4)
  • Support for the wide angle theatrical 21:9 video aspect ratio
  • Dynamic synchronization of video and audio streams
  • CEC extensions provide more expanded command and control of consumer electronics devices through a single control point

Your GPU supports this, so you could use a G-SYNC Monitor. Now, I don't know what monitor you should buy. Maybe look for a budget-oriented but at good refresh rate (up there they don't tell you that refresh rate support is higher at 1080p).

Cheers!

Hi... not sure if this is still an active thread, but I can follow up on my recent purchase of the Y720 along with Lenovo Y27g 27" monitor. I'm not too great at maxing out my computer's output resolution, but I can manage solid performance at 85hz playing Fortnite, Unreal, and others as well using a Mini Displayport. But anything higher than that (120hz, 144hz), my monitor begins this black flickering constantly. Sometimes every 2 minutes... sometimes every few seconds. (If someone knew an answer to my issue... that would be awesome.)

Solid gaming output at 85hz on a G-Sync monitor.

@superchicobros If you haven't already solved the issue, are you using HDMI or displayport? I recommend trying it again with a displayport cable.

Can confirm mDP to DP cable(1.2) connected to DELL S2716DG only works at 2560x1440 85hz.
100hz does not display at all.
120hz and 144hz flicker at random times.

I also have a gaming PC that manages to output 2560x1440 144hz so I know for sure the monitor is fine.

Re: Lenovo Legion Y720 with external Gaming Monitor

I had to make an update.

Tested the following:

1.  mDP to DP cable(1.2) connected to DELL S2716DG(2560x1440 144hz) flickering occurs.
2. mDP to DP cable(1.4) connected to DELL S2716DG(2560x1440 144hz) NO flickering and other issues observed.

3. thunderbolt3/usb type c adapter connected to DP to DP (1.4) connected to DELL S2716DG(2560x1440 144hz) NO flickering and other issues observed.

Apparently the version for adaptive sync support on DP needs to be 1.2a or above. From the initial observation that 1.4 works in any combination.

Hope this info helps someone out there.

Cheers.

So you're saying that using a mDP to DP(1.4) on the lenovo y720 should have no problems running at 1440p 144hz for that particular monitor?
