Lenovo Legion Y740-15IRHg - After Last BIOS & NVIDIA update, laptop screen flashes & rolls

2021-08-03, 0:13 AM

A few days ago, Lenovo Vantage pushed out a BIOS/Drivers update to my Y740 followed immediately by another update of some kind - one of which I noticed also had something to do with my NVIDIA board.  Since then, my laptop screen has begun flashing & rolling continuously, so that it can no longer be used for viewing.  I can still use the computer via an external monitor, but I am wondering how can this be fixed, or can the updates be backed out (and kept from being re-applied)?   Help?

Re:Lenovo Legion Y740-15IRHg - After Last BIOS & NVIDIA update, laptop screen flashes & rolls

Ok... talked to my brother, who is a better PC guru than I am.  He convinced me to go to Device Manager, NVIDIA driver and uninstall it.  Then to go to the top of Device manager, and under 'Action,' click on scan for hardware changes.  That reinstalled the NVIDIA driver and suddenly, my laptop screen was working again.  YEAH!  There's been a little subsequent weirdness, such as when I close the laptop screen, the external monitor going into dark mode (never did that before), but going in and out of some kind of "Night" thing (which was and remains OFF), it stopped doing that.  I THINK everything is now ok, but I haven't rebooted yet.  If the problem comes back, I'll return here (unless, of course, the whole thing simply explodes...)

Hey, thanks.  We would've got there your way (pretty much exactly what we did, really), but it was helpful to be talked through it with my brother.

THANK YOU!

Hello @riverboatsam,

Thanks for reaching out.

I would suggest trying to uninstall the display drivers then try to install the ones from the support site if you haven't already done that.

You can download it using this link (please note that you may have to enter your serial number in order to get the right file): https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y740-15irhg/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Graphics%20Processing%20Units%20%28GPU%29%20and%20Server-AI%20Accelerators

Could you also post the BIOS Version currently installed on your machine? You might also find success with turning off automatic updates in Lenovo Vantage if this was the program used to update the drivers.

Regards,

Jack_Lenovo1

Also from MS System, Display Driver Info:

I see two display drivers at the url you copied for me ( https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y740-15irhg/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Graphics%20Processing%20Units%20%28GPU%29%20and%20Server-AI%20Accelerators )  - one for NVIDIA and one for Intel- would I be installing both of them, or just the NVIDIA?

(BTW, both of them are dated Nov 19, 2020)

AND... Ok, I've never uninstalled a driver.  I found the link on this site on how to do that ( https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht502484 ) using the Win Device Manager screen.

Assuming I DO manage to identify and uninstall them, isn't that going to mean I won't have a working display with which to see what I am doing??  (Please forgive my ignorance in this)

I was going to attach 2 pics from the Device driver Properties, but the "attach file" process on this webpage stopped halfway and now won't respond.

So... what I'm seeing under NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 is:

Driver Provider:  NVIDIA

Driver Date:  11/02/2020

Driver Version: 27.21.14.5720

Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

There are Buttons for Driver Details, Update Driver, Roll Back Driver (greyed out), Disable Device, and Uninstall Device).

However... backing out of "Properties" and right-clicking on GeForce RTX 2060 (Under "Display Adapters" on the Device Manager screen), the options are:

Update Driver, Disable Device, Uninstall Device, Scan for Hardware changes, and the aforementioned Properties.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same things, then I would click on Uninstall Device, correct ?

(And there appears to only be the NVIDIA, not an Intel ?? so maybe I should not install an Intel driver afterwards?)

I have downloaded both NVIDIA and Intel Display drivers, saving them off for now.

Still, I am seriously worried that if I delete the existing drivers, then I won't be able to see anything in order to execute the install of the "new" drivers.   The uninstall process as listed on the Lenovo website does have a reboot in the sequence of things to do after doing the uninstall; I guess I'm worried that after doing an uninstall and then trying a reboot, I will not be able to access my laptop.  Sorry for being so verbose.  This is scary.

Thank you for your help.

Re:Lenovo Legion Y740-15IRHg - After Last BIOS & NVIDIA update, laptop screen flashes & rolls

I thought I should show the bottom of the "Events" tab from the NVIDIA driver, but again, I could not upload a jpg. Here's what's there (minus the lengthy "information" box for each of the 4 troubled associated entries). Interestingly, the first two are dated 07/30, the night the driver updates occurred. The last 2 are dated 07/31, which would have been after I did a cold start the next day:

7/30/2021 11:56:00 PM Device service added (nvlddmkm)

7/30/2021 11:56:00 PM Device service added (NVDisplayContainerLocalSystem)

7/31/2021 11:14:37 AM Device service added (nvlddmkm)

7/31/2021 11:14:37 AM Device service added (NVDisplayConttainerLocalSystem)

- not sure why that would be doing that again.

Well,I'm sorry to say that the problem is back. It was good for a couple of days, then has reappeared. I've applied the fix each time, but it is now lasting only until the next re-boot or a return from sleep.

Hello @riverboatsam,

Thanks for the update.

Are you running any kind of auto updates from Lenovo Vantage or Windows updates?

You might want to try and disable the auto updates to test if the issue will be resolved by doing that.

Ok, it looks like I found a better solution.  Apparently, when you delete the driver (uninstall the device), you get the driver that Microsoft and/or Lenovo provides.  That driver is just no good.  Instead, this time I went to nvidia.com and downloaded and installed THEIR driver.  There were actually 2 driver options there... I chose the "studio" one.  I've installed it, and yes, the flickering went away.  It also STAYED away, even after a reboot, a sleep, and a cold start (which was not the case with the MS/Lenovo driver).  Hopefully I will not pick up the Lenovo/MS driver again in some future update.  Again, if everything goes south once more, I will update this thread.
