Lenovo Legion Y740 17" laptop has freezes once in a few days.

2019-12-24, 7:31 AM

Lenovo Legion Y740 17" laptop has freezes once in a few days, i have installed all the windows 10 updates!

Diagnostics tell me all is OK.

Also The lenovo App gives no identification of problems.

The laptop is 2 months old (relatively new!).

It has Windows 10 (64 bit)  installed on it.

Is it possible to check a log file or something?

Or should i return it to get checked?

Also i don't have any weird software installed. And i have Kaspersky Internet Security installed. Also Windows Defender.

So, i don't have any clues. Does samebody has an idea how to tackle this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Hi kut!

There are a few factors to check when the computer freezes. It can be software or hardware.

Does it give you a blue screen error when it happens? Also, what are the common applications running on your computer when it freezes? From there, we would be able to isolate the case.

If the issues persists, we highly advise re-installing Windows 10 on your computer.

Regards,

Re: Lenovo Legion Y740 17" laptop (RTX 2070) has freezes once in a few days.

I did a reset (clean install) of Windows 10 (the second time).

So there are no third party installed applications, only the one that where pre installed by Lenovo.

So, i can check my mail, and run the Lenovo Vantage App, and use Outlook 365.

The Freezes are randomly, for example when using Outlook mail, or when using the desktop.

Maybe it could be the Geforce RTX 2070 Windows 10 driver?? (But also, the most recent drivers are installed.)

So, the are NO BSODs, no error Messages, the screen just freezes. The keyboard also, but the backlight still works.

The keyboard Esc/CappsLock and NumLock leds are also ON (Unable to turn them Off).

I can do a Function + Spacebar, and the keyboard reacts.

But the Middle Power/Sleep button does nothing. Yes, if i hold it 5 seconds, it resets the laptop.

So i did nothing out of the ordinary.

So, i am out of options!?

Thanks, for any advice.

Hi kut,

Running 2 AV programs isn't recommended, they have a chance of cancelling each other out.  It would be like having no AV.

Try disabling one or the other, (I would start with Kapersky), and see if anything changes.

Is OK, because i'm testing now with a clean install of Windows 10, only Office 365 running as extra.
And NO Kaspersky Internet security running.
Let's see!
Thanks for the answer!

On other forums they says it s normal above 90C, dunno what to say, ofc i don’t like it either, that’s why i keep it on quiet 85C/91 after a day of apex legends max, so quiet till they do something about it so we can go performance with 85C if not, it’s a lesson i’ll never repeat. still regreting not getting a laptop from small producers which it seems they arebetter. Look up for elektruniks mech 15g2, they say it’s far better than any gaming laptop. With 9750h not reaching even 85C and not throttling. i think there is something wrong about voltage, i do see alot of 1.406 and 1.417, dunno why lenovo likes it this way. I have 2 140mm 3000 rpm pwm industrial nf a14 under it, full blowing in the case, i thought of removing the black filter from inside it, dunno if it can damage anything(like small particles escaping through 3 filters(1 in noctua, 1 in cooler pad,1 mesh in lenovo’s case) but after seeking for the heat i think it comes from VRM which surround gpu(65Cfull performance) and this is beyond me, replaced the thermal pads with something better, in idle is min 30C and browsing 38C, but in load, 85C (nfs heat, the witcher, bfv, titanfall) only apex goes 91C. Never think of performance cause it’s going 99C.

Further, what I noticed 2 days ago, is that, when i did a soft reset (or powerbutton), that i could not type my login code at the login screen.

I did 3 resets, all with same result.

What it then fixed, was (again), hold  powerbutton for 5 seconds.

And appearently, if i have a screensaver, that runs fine, but if i let it run for 2 days (as test), it appears that windows was freezed (also no CapsLock, or any other ..Lock).

The screensaver kept running.

I now am trying the last resort, thats clean install, without updating any drivers! (little crazy)

I let you know the result in a few days.

Regards, Ronnie.

Hi Kut,

Did the windows reinstall end up fixing things? I got one of these computers (Y740 RTX2060) this week and it seems to be having the same issue (freezes and locks keyboard until power button shut down). I've seen some comments about the CPU overheating, so I undervolted. Issues may be less frequent now, but still occuring. RAM and SSD seem to be working fine.
