Lenovo Y520 7300HQ Turbo Boost Problem

Hello i have a Lenovo Y520 80WK014PTX;

Processor: 1x Intel Core i5-7300HQ Processor(i5-7300HQ)
Memory: 1x 16GBDDR42400
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64(TR:Turkish,EN:English)
Hard Drive: 1x 128GB PCIe

Graphics: 1x NVIDIA GTX1050
Monitor: 15.6 1920x1080
Bios: LENOVO 4KCN40WW 17.10.2017

First of all i have to say it is a great laptop and i am glad i chose Lenovo, it has one of the best cooling expect only one thing that i have a turbo boost problem. It looks like there is a thermal lock for I5 7300HQ which doesn't let Turbo boost after 80 degree celsius! When i use both Lenovo's strong cooling and my personal laptop cooler 7300HQ manages to keep turbo boost at 3095 mhz for hours in games such as BF1 and i can play them without facing any serious bottleneck nor stuttering while CPU tempetures are average 75 degree (78 maximum) and 1050 works at average 60 but there is too much noise ofc!!

When i try to close Lenovo's strong cooling or my laptop cooler then bios locks 7300HQ at 2400 mhz and doesn't let it to use turbo boost no matter what and because of that im experiencing very bad bottleneck and stuttering in some games such as BF1 while CPU tempetures drops to average 68 degree! Im 100% sure this laptop can handle 7300HQ under 90 degree without strong cooling nor a laptop cooler so i wonder why there is such a harsh thermal lock? Perhaps the problem is my bios version??

I also believe bios shouldn't be locked, i know it is for protecting customers from burning their fragile machines but at least there should be a way for experienced users to unlock laptop bios and change settings as they wish due this locked bios thing also creates many problems such as mine...

Re: Lenovo Y520 7300HQ Turbo Boost Problem

Here it's video:

https://youtu.be/QoYwbrkH1jw

Until 2:08 Strong cooling + a good laptop cooler 73-74 degree CPU tempeture at constant 3095 mhz then i closed Lenovo strong cooling and CPU tempeture slowly increases until 4:30 then BIOS locks 7300HQ at 2396 mhz when it hits 79 degree!! While completely destroying performance ofc and it doesn't let Turbo boost no matter what until CPU tempeture drops to 65 or something. Extremely annoying thermal lock and the saddest part 79 degree isn't high what so ever!! Is it my Y520 or all Y520s are same guys??

PS: Add 10 fps to those numbers you see because i was recording with geforce experience and it loaded already bottlenecked CPU even more but when CPU gets locked at 2396 mhz stuttering happens without recording as well...

Re: Lenovo Y520 7300HQ Turbo Boost Problem

I knew this problem, starting with intel 4th Generation processor ,

The simple explanation is caused by the high temperature. The previous solution is to update the bios let the processor will not drop.

This is a problem with intel, it has dropped that it will not rise automatically.

It seems that this game has a very high load on the cpu, you can extend the processor's high clock time, but it can't be too long.

Re: Lenovo Y520 7300HQ Turbo Boost Problem

You are right mate, i searched as 7300HQ thermal throttle and like you said intel is doing that after 79-80 degree while i think it is 90 degree for 7700HQ so 7300HQ must be way cheaper CPU and i regret not buying 7700HQ one!! It is manageable, undervolted it by -0.140V and still works stable but barely holds at 76-77 degree so close to the limit with a good laptop cooler!! I think i will also clean the laptop and change thermal paste so it could work cooler but intel says 7300HQ allows max 100 degree while it can never reach that if it gets throttle at 80, so annoying Smiley Sad(

''It seems that this game has a very high load on the cpu, you can extend the processor's high clock time, but it can't be too long.''

You meant turbo boost power time window? In XTU Multipliers are locked but i can change V, Power limits etc but because it is already thermal throttling i don't think i can gain much performance.
