Lenovo Y520 stuttering issues

2018-01-23, 4:51 AM

So, I bought a new Lenovo Y520 with:

I7 7700-HQ

GTX 1060 MaxQ Design

2 TB 5400 RPM HDD

8 GB RAM

And it's running awfull. It's running worse than my 2012 laptop. In games, after playing for 15 minutes, every 6-7 seconds I get freezes that last 0.5 - 1 second , also the sounds seems to lag behind and come back after the freeze is gone.

It happens in every game I have tried : Overwatch , PUBG, COD : WW II.

All games were ran on LOW and VERY LOW.

After downloading MSI Afterburner and Intel XTU, I see that everytime a stutter happens, both CPU and GPU usage drop from 90% to under 5% then come back. I also underclocked the CPU a little so now its temp is always under 65C and the stutter still happens, so it doesn't seem to be throttling.

Installed multiple versions of windows, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, nothing worked.

Also found this problem reported alot of times on this forum and still no answer / solution.

Can we please get a solution to this problem that seems to occur alot?

It seems like they don't really care, over 6 months with no answer. I know which company not to recommend

So here is the Solution that worked for me, before Microsoft forced me to install Version 1803:

Registry: \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\*****\0000\

* is for a longer Key of Numbers.
Select in this Key the Folder \0000\ and add the following Registry Entries:

DWORD: PerfLevelsrc==> 3322
DWORD: PowermizerEnable ==> 0
DWORD: PowermizerLevel ==> 1
DWORD: PowermizerLevelAC ==> 1

This disables the Nvidia PowerMizer, he is the reason you have the stuttering issues.

Hi Figz, I found two folder with 0000 since I'm not sure which ****** you are talking about.

The first 0000 folder have a bunch of things inside.

Another one only has one item in it.

Please explain the steps more clearly, thx.

Thanks for your reply, Figz. I've modified the registries and restarted and it might have fixed the stuttering, but I still experience low performance. For example, a game like CS:GO, every setting on low should get me at least 200 fps on average with this build, whereas I average 90-95. I'm thinking it might actually be the CPU, though no signs of thermal throttling as I get this average fps continuosly, never more than 110.

I was wondering, which laptop do you have and how is your performance in games?

Re: Lenovo Y520 stuttering issues

I hope I am not off topic but I have the same problem, I made an entire post on reddit about it but  I answers yet so I will just post it here too maybe some 1 knows anything

OK so, I got a Legion y530 which gives me screen tearing with vsync off and stutters (aka fps drops / gpu usage drops to 0%) with vsync on/off (yes, it doesn't matter if the gsync is on or off) in all games that I play. I tried everything I've found on the Internet(forums mostly with the same issue I've got), from different settings with nvidia inspector to different games resolutions/settings and nothing works, absolutely nothing. At this point I don't know what to do anymore and I start thinking there is a problem with the laptop and it's kinda frustrating because it has 3 month since I've got it and I can't enjoy it at all. The problem persists in old and new games (wow tbc, far cry 5,metro exodus, shadow of war, darksiders 3). The things that I didn't try yet is a ssd which is on the way and dual channel memory which I think will have no impact because as I said, old games with low requirements have the same issue so I don't see how will that change anything.

Yes, I reinstalled drivers 100 times, reinstalled windows few times and no results.

Specs

i5 8300h

Gtx 1050 ti

HDD 7200 rpm

8gb ram single channel 60hz IPS screen

I use throttlestop - 150 uv no problems with that and msi afterburner with +150 core and +400 memory and no problem so far. Even w/o throttlestop and afterburner, the problem persists. Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thank you.
