Lenovo Y530-15ICH - Charger model adl135ndc3a making crackling noise

Hello - this is the second charger that seems to be having problems.  The last one I had overheated so badly (after having the laptop for two weeks) that I could smell burning plastic, and it would no longer charge the laptop.  I returned the laptop and got a new one of the same kind, with a new charger (same model), and now it's charging the laptop but is making a crackling noise...is this normal?  I'm considering getting another kind of laptop (not lenovo) since this has been a bad experience so far.

Hi danman1202,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I suggest to have this reported to technical support.

They may check if the BIOS have already been updated and if this is something that can correct it else they would get you other options.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

...Thanks, I'll contact them.  But I am also looking for people's opinions on this here, which is why I posted this, and why I did not just call tech support and decide not to post here.

Re: Lenovo Y530-15ICH - Charger model adl135ndc3a making crackling noise

I heard something about the charger not being adequate for this model. The charger you have is likely 135w, but the recommended one is 170w. Like this one:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/iTEKIRO-170W-AC-Adapter-Lenovo-Legion-Y530-15ICH-1060-81LB-Legion-Y530-81...

It was a weird move on their part give the lower watt charger, and lots of criticism is on them for it.

They cannot ship the laptop with 135W and recommend 170W, there is no logic in that...
It's a big mistake on their part and so far everybody is ignoring the big elefant.
The noise you hear is coil whine, and indeed the 135W is clearly not enough.

is it safe to operate with the 135w?

Re: Lenovo Y530-15ICH - Charger model adl135ndc3a making crackling noise

Well, according to Lenovo it is but after continuous use you would get reduced power or shut-down, depending on your settings.
On my laptop whilst gaming and fan set to maximum, it drops 10% of battery. Coil whine is't a big issue let's say but some people opted to replace the "faulty" adapter. I guess it's up to the end-consumer as Lenovo does not want to be involved in the post-sale Support.

It's completely safe to stick with the 135w adapter. However, it's recommended you purchase a 170w one so that you can charge your device adequately.
