Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

2019-07-10, 5:54 AM

I just got my Legion Y540 in the mail and I'm dealing with the same issue. I'm an audio engineer and I bought this laptop to upgrade from my old Acer Aspire. I've tried everything from installing the sound drivers to changing the power settings for my CPU and nothing seems to work.

I get popping noises when I'm using headphones and while I'm using my studio monitors. If i can't find a fix soon I'm going to have to return the laptop and try a different one. I can't do my job when there's audio clipping every 3 seconds. Really frustrating tbh

It's obvious by now i'm not the only one with this audio issue.

Another problem occured. When I connected the notebook via hdmi with an external monitor, it could not transmit the audio and it instead kept using the notebook speakers. There was no way to use the TV speakers. Another audio issue.

So I decided to sent it back to Lenovo for repairs. Let's hope for the best..

Hi all,

Has the issue been resolved yet(permanently)? I just received my laptop a week ago and this crackling sound has been driving me crazy. Tried every single solution from updating drivers to disabling the wifi card( can still hear it from both speakers and headset).

Not for me I ended up contacting customer support and they’re sending out a replacement.

I gotta wait for it to be built before it gets sent out so I won’t have it for another 2-3 weeks.

I tried everything to fix the crackling issue but nothing worked. I reinstalled windows, reinstalled the drivers, disabled the WiFi card, and nothing worked.

Very unfortunate and if this new one ends up having the same problem then I’m just gonna boycott Lenovo and go with someone else.

I bought the laptop for audio engineering and trying to do that while the sound pops every 5 seconds is insanity inducing.

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

I received my Y540 weeks ago, I have exact same issue here, crackling sound will only disappear during some heavy stuff like gaming or stress test with prime95, also unplugging charger to let the laptop operate using battery will eliminate the crackling sound. I did try some of the suggestion in above reply, but the crackling sound still remain. =(

Anyone found solution on this?

Update:

I just downloaded and installed the Realtek HD Audio Driver from https://realtek-download.com/download-hd/

The driver from the site is 6.0.1.8186. So far so good, the laptop did not produce any crackling sound after that. You guys can give it a try and let me know if it resolve the issue.

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

Had the same problem with my Legion Y540 (not on battery). Installing the Realtek HD Audio Driver from the link above solved the problem. Due to slow server there I used this installer: https://download.cnet.com/Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Codec-Windows-7-8-8-1-10-64-bit/3000-2120_4-77507761.html

The installer removes the old driver first and after reboot it will install the new driver. Attention: Dolby Atmos for Gaming Application doesn't work anymore after that. But I didn't use it, so I removed this. Windows Update will install even more Realtek and Dolby drivers, but still no popping sound, so it seems to be a software related problem. Btw: Never had the problem with bluetooth conntected speakers, but I prefer a cable connection due to latency in gaming.

Hope that lenovo will fix this with new official drivers.
