Re:Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

2020-05-18, 17:57 PM

Well, I think the core problem is that the audio hardware is just crap, that's it. It's not just the crackling problem, but when I plug into it any loudspeaker, I get that annoying 50Hz ground loop buzzing whenever there is no sound playing. I can't leave the speaker set turned on at night, because when I turn off the laptop, or it just goes to sleep, it annoys me to hell with the loud buzzing, being even loduer than when there is no active audio content. I tried all my audio equipment with other devices, and none does this. In fact, I don't own any other electric device with a 3.5mm jack which would present this much of a ground loop buzzing issue, and that's just sad for a 1000$ machine. Based on this, I can only assume the isolation from the on-board power noises is similarly poor, in which case you can only try to decrease the noise, but you can't fix a poor hardware with drivers, nor with messing around in the registry.

Re:Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

2020-05-19, 13:32 PM

Hi guys,

I was facing the same exact issues as those mentioned here with my brand new Y540 and

after a lot of search and trial/errors, I think I found a possible fix.

Since the noise was becoming stronger when I was scrolling my browser, I thought that

maybe there is some electrical interference caused by bad insulation/grounding.  So I simply

covered (carefully) both the wifi card and the headphone jack with some insulating tape.

I am using the laptop for a few hours now and the disturbing noise (mainly coming from my left
earphone) has disappeared completely. My OS is Debian Linux and I haven't done any BIOS
or driver updates. Also I haven't reduced the power of my wifi antenna. Just used some tape.

I hope I helped. It is really an amazing laptop otherwise and I know how disturbing it is to come
across such stupid issues. Good luck :)

Re:Lenovo Y540 crackling sound (Solved By Using USB External Sound Card)

2020-06-04, 11:54 AM

Hi all, allow me to help you solve this issue.

I bought a Lenovo Legion Y540 on 13/03/2020 and received the laptop on 28/03/2020.

After 1 week of use, i started to realize that there's some static sound coming out from my external speakers and i thought that my speakers are busted. (I only bought for 1 month FYI)

I decided to plug out the external speakers and temporarily using the laptop's internal speaker but to my astonishment, there's static sound too and it's getting worst everyday.

The static sound only appears when the charger is plugged in and charging. Once you are using battery mode only, the sound disappeared. I am very sure you guys are facing the exact same issue.

I called in Lenovo premium care and they send down an engineer to change the whole motherboard in 3 working days. It does not help.

The engineer helped to escalate it to Lenovo and Lenscare send me a 1 to 1 replacement in 3 weeks time.

After receiving the replacement laptop and tested for 1 full day, there's totally no static sound and i was like, finally it was because the previous laptop has manufacturing defects.

Problem solved! BUT.....

1 week later, i started to hear some static sound again and i was like, f***.... this model is cursed and i should have bought an Alienware in the first place.

In the end, i bought an USB EXTERNAL SOUND CARD (i bought Creative G6) to try bypass the internal sound card (and disabled the internal Realtek in the settings).

And... it works... 2 weeks on and still no static sound...YET.

In conclusion, this model has a design defect on the sound card/motherboard.

I bought lenovo legion y540 gtx 1650 model and after 3 to 4 months of use there is no issue in general except the sound crackling while watching movies and listening songs. What should i do?

Is this hardware issue or software issue please let me know.

Thank you.

Hey Bro,

As mentioned in my earlier post (message #274), it is an embedded hardware problem for Y540.

You just need to purchase an External USB Sound Card (i used Creative G6) and connect your speaker to it.

Problem will be solved and this is the only straightforward solution without cracking your head or meddling with the system's registry settings etc, causing more unnecessary problems or crash.

Re:Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

I HAVE FOUND AN EASY AND DEFINITIVE SOLUTION FOR MY LEGION Y540-15IRH!

  1. Open the "Microsoft Store".
  2. Search and install the "Intel Optane Memory and Storage Management" app.
  3. Launch the app and go to the "Performance" tab.
  4. Disable "Link Power Management" and restart your computer.
  5. Audio should be fixed right now!

This solution I found worked flawlessly on my machine. I'm so happy right now. If you can't open the app or see the "Link Power Management" option, try installing the "Intel Rapid Storage" drivers from Intel's website. I believe you can disable this feature from the drivers too, without the app, but using the app is a faster solution. In any case, you can be sure this sound issue is related to the "Link Power Management" feature from Intel's Rapid Storage drivers.
