Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

For those of you who have found a connection between the audio crackling and your wifi card, this is a great solution:

  1. Right click on wifi icon (right bottom of task bar) and choose Open Network & Internet Settings.
  2. Now you are at Network Connections window, Status tab (win10), click on Change Adapter Options
  3. Right click on your enabled network adapter (Wi-Fi) and click on Properties
  4. Now you are at Wi-Fi Properties window, click on Configure button.
  5. Click on Advanced tab,
  6. You will see properties in a multilist window, choose Transmit Power.
  7. There will be a setting of selected property in the right side, choose the 4- Mid-High or 3- Mid option (I use 4, and default was 5-Highest)

Credit to pseudofate who posted this solution for the Y520 model - it worked like a charm on my new Y540.

Hope this helps,

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

Unfortunately the transmit power workaround does not seem to work for me. It may have made the issue less frequent; it is hard to say. But I definitely still have a cracklng noise sometimes even using the 3 - Mid option. As a sidenote, does anyone know if reducing the tranmist power has a negative effect on wifi performance or anything like that?

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

dissapointed111 - the difference isn't significant enough to be noticeable, so I wouldn't be concerned.

Other models I believe ship with the default set lower out of the box. I certainly haven't run into any troubles streaming etc.

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

I tried this workaround. Unfortunately it did not work, and did not fix the audio problem for me. The crackling was a little less maybe, but it was definitely not gone. :'(

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

I have a brand new Legion Y540-17IHR, i7 9750H, BIOS BHCN29WW, Win10 build 1903 with audio crackling problem.

One strange thing I noticed is that the USB2 and USB3 speed is only about 60%
of what it should be. The weird thing is that if the computer processor is loaded
heavily, eg with a benchmark program or other software that requires a lot of
processor power, the USB speed goes up to normal values and the crackling sound disappears.
It may be a USB or data bus problem and not directly related to the sound card.
Lenovo support failed to solve the problem despite 1 hour try via remote desktop.
I think I have to return the computer unless a quick fix can be found.

Did you try the transmit power to 3 solution posted above on page 7 here?

Re: Lenovo Y540 crackling sound

Yes I have tried that. Have also tried with 1. Lowest and also with deactivation of the Wi-Fi card. But none of that solved the problem.
