Lenovo Y540 with an audio desync issue. (DPC Latency Maybe?)

2019-09-01, 4:41 AM

I seem to be having an issue where as I keep a video playing, the audio gradually desyncs with the video. This happens both with headphones on and just with the regular laptop speakers. Here are the things I've tried doing.System Specs

  • Lenovo Legion Y540
  • CPU: i5-9300h
  • GPU: GTX 1660ti
  • RAM: 8GB 2666Mhz
  • Storage: 256GB M.2. SSD

What I've tried doing:

  1. Reinstalling the Audio Driver. The first thing I did was uninstall the audio driver and let Windows install it again. There are a few drivers for audio, but the only one I uninstalled and reinstalled is the Realtek(R) Audio one. Either way, this didn't fix anything.

  2. Making sure drivers/BIOS were up to date. I did this by checking the versions of drivers in the device manager and making sure they were all up to date. Everything seemed up to date with what Lenovo had to offer. I also updated the Nvidia graphics drivers, since some people said this solved their problems.

  3. Setting Minimum Power Usage with the Power Plan to 100%. This seems to be a fix that works for a lot of people, but it didn't work for me. I just set the minimum power usage while on battery/plugged in to 100%just to see if it would work (default value is 5%). I've since set this back to 5% since having my CPU work at 100% no matter what seems like a bad idea.

  4. Checking DPC with DPC Latency Checker and LatencyMon. This is where I think the problem is, but I don't know for sure and I have no clue how I would go about tackling this problem. Here is the graph I got from DPC Latency Checker, and here are the results from LatencyMon. LatencyMon says that maybe dxgkrnl.sys is the culprit, but I've also read that this is just a red herring most of the time. If this really is a DPC issue, I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me any clue on how to tackle this.

I'd appreciate anyone's help with this. Either way, I'm going to try and keep this post updated with other things I've tried in case someone else stumbles across this in the future. It's pretty infuriating not being able to play games/watch videos because of audio latency issues.

UPDATE ONE: I left LatencyMon running for an hour to get more of a feel of what the DPC was like, and here are the final results. I definitely think this is a DPC Latency issue now, would just like to know how to solve it. Here is the report LatencyMon gave me if anyone can interpret it for me as well.

UPDATE TWO: I booted into safe mode to try and use LatencyMon, but it doesn't work in safe mode I guess. Regardless, I played a video for about 15 minutes (enough time for the audio to desync on regular windows) and it seemed to be working without any sync problems. Since safe mode disables a whole lot of drivers, I'm pretty convinced now that this is a DPC issue.

I have this issue too, a lot of pops when audio is played for some time... I checked and my latency is going crazy, hdaudiobus is one and the other is dxgkrnl and others from time to time...

I did everything I could to try and diagnose what was causing this, but I ended up biting the bullet and just going to a Lenovo repair center. They said they swapped out all the parts and nothing would fix it, so they deemed it a motherboard problem and they're ordering a new one. I'll update the thread and let you know if swapping the motherboard fixed it.

Thanks! I am excited to lern if it's fixed and how much time it took... I am worried since this is my only machine and I work freelance with it, so I can't afford to stay without a working pc

I have the same problems. I can game, no problem the problems are when I try and watch a simple Youtube video that is longer than 5 minutes. The beginning is always synced but around the 5-8 minute mark the audio starts desyncing (audio comes before the image). According to LatencyMon the drivers that are messing up my system are HDAudBus.sys, Wdf01000.sys (ISR) and HDAudBus.sys, dxgkrnl.sys, nvlddmkm.sys (DPC). I called customer service and they ran some tests and just told me to wait until the next software update. The vendor of the laptop told me to put my laptop back to factory settings and reinstall windows 10.

I only have one week left before the purchase cancellation deadline, I'd rather not send back this laptop because it is great otherwise and I don't want to settle for less at this price point.

Did anyone come across a fix yet? I am desperate for it to work because I need this laptop for university.

Wow you are literally in my situation! University is starting super soon, and my 30 day return deadline just ended... I love the laptop and was the best for the price but the vendor just started his back to school sales and I feel depressed... I have absolutely the same issues like you, same in latencymon and same with youtube... It's really annoying and I am 100% sure it's a software issue since no problem in linux and stuff, don't reset your windows I just did a complete wipe with a new windows and the problem is still there just not that noticeable until I sleep my laptop and it's back. I love the laptop, but Lenovo has made no official statement and I am worried since I do a lot of work and chill with music for university and freelance. I think it's a software issue and we will get a fix, the question is when? Also some people don't  have this issue so it's really weird.

I have only heard people complain about the sound popping, but I can honestly live with that, just not with the desyncing. I start school on monday in Graphic Design so I need my laptop to work cause I need to be able to edit video's without problems. This is honestly so frustrating because you seem to be the only person that has the exact same problem as me. I just mailed my vendor for some advice on returning the product, if it is even necessary. The only relevant info I got was from a worker at Lenovo that told me that it is a malfunction in the whole new produced batch, so soon more people will turn up with the same problems. Also, the shop I got my laptop from just increased their prices (coincidence?) so asking for the same one will cost me.

Wow crazy... I am in the same position as you, it's my last year of Graphic Design in New Bulgarian University and we will be focusing on motion design ( so after effects ) and a little bit of audio design, so I am really worried :/

Same problem here...

Received at the beginning of the week and I have the exact same issue that you describe.
I tried a lot of workarounds without success.

I hope for a fix soon...

I can confirm both the desnyc and popping occuring on my unit, and Linux seems to have no problems so it's either a windows or a driver issue.
