Lenovo Y700 14ISK graphics card not working and some keys not working

2019-10-07, 11:37 AM

Model: Ideapad Y700 14" Laptop - 80NU000WUS
Built:

• 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ Processor (2.60GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
• AMD Radeon R9 M375 4GB
• Intel HD Graphics 530
• 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR4 1600 MHz
• 1TB 5400 RPM+128GB SSD

TLDR at bottom.

I bought Ideapad Y700 in April 2016 from lenovo website, after a year of use, I started noticing my screen flickering while playing games.
I am a casual gamer, usually played strategy games in low/medium graphic setting.

After 1.5 years, after couple of BSODs, my AMD Graphics card was dead.
When I booted up the laptop, it started, but the screen had no display.

I disabled the dual graphics card setting in BIOS, and switched to Intel HD graphics.
I tried all the solutions listed in this forum, like removing driver and reinstalling AMD driver etc, but none of them worked.

I was still able to play old strategy games on Intel HD, until 9-10 buttons on my laptop suddenly stopped working.
Now, the laptop has become useless for me, not to mention I am quite upset about it.

Other Issues I had:

  1. After 3 Months of use - HDD was not been detected:
Fluke Solution: Press power button for 1 min, if you are lucky HDD might show up again(Try 5-6 times).
This is a recurring issue, I don't know what causes it and don’t think this is the actual solution.
Most probably the HDD cable was not connected properly during assembly.
Due to this I stopped carrying my laptop around much.

  2. After 2 years, some buttons in Keyboard stopped working

Could someone help me estimate the cost of replacing AMD graphics card and keyboard.

If the cost is too high, I might consider buying a different laptop.

TLDR:

AMD graphics card and keyboard stopped working, need an estimate cost for replacement.
Disappointed that laptop isn't functional after just 2 years.

Hello AngryKeyboard,

Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done if the GPU is dead. Have you tried removing the backplate and giving the fans and areas surrounding the heat pipes a good cleaning with compressed air?

The failures sound a lot like a classic symptom of continuous overheating, which usually means the damage is done. However, if there is a large accumulation of dust, it can act as an insulator.

Apart from that, unless you have a local electronics store that can reflow chips, you're kind of stuck.

The local service expert did something called "reballing", the card started working again, but only for 2 weeks.
That sadly means the chip was already damaged :(
I am thinking of replacing the chip now.

Does Lenovo still sell graphic card parts for this model?

Also, can keyboard be replaced for this laptop?

Hi AngryKeyboard,

If he reballed it, which is another term for reflowing, then it's probably gone. Lenovo doesn't sell the integrated chip separately, so you'd either have to find a donor board online or reball a different chip. Honestly, it's not worth the effort ususally.

According to the Hardware Maintenace Manual: https://usermanual.wiki/Lenovo/IdeapadY70014IskHmm201510.492888051.pdf

The keyboard is a single assembly built-in to the top of the chassis. I tried searching the US FRU, but I'm not getting any hits for suppliers.

Hi ,

I would suggest visiting the support site and finding a local service provider:

https://support.lenovo.com/sk/en/serviceprovider

It would be your best bet to get it fixed if parts are still available.
