Lenovo Y700-15 ISK duplicated NVIDIA card in device manager or BSOD after boot on AC adapter

Hi,

The problem I have with my Lenovo Y700 can be described by the following scenarios:

1. After the PC being turned off for at least 10-15 minutes, I turn it on (AC adapter is plugged in), then I get either:

a) a BSOD with  Bugcheck code: 0x113 (0x19, 0x2, 0x10DE, 0x139B) and error VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR,

b) a wrong NVIDIA graphics card detected, forming a second entry in device manager with different instance ID (the SUBSYS part is set to all zeroes) - Windows installs some old driver for it

c) the right NVIDIA device detected, but without directx 12 properly enabled (when I run dxdiag, the supported version of directx is set to 11.4, not 12)

After a restart everything goes back to normal - the right card, the right driver, the right directx (sometimes I need another restart because when correct card is detected, drivers are sometimes reinstalled). This lasts until I shut the PC down for another more than about 10 minutes - after that, everything starts again.

2. If I turn the PC on and boot on battery and plug in my AC adapter only after Windows 10 loads, everything is fine from the get-go.

I tried many things, like:

- recovering the OS from base image

- installing latest drivers (as well as using DDU)

- installing only drivers from Lenovo support page

- updating BIOS

- changing BIOS settings (e.g. disabling fast startup, changing boot mode to legacy etc.)

- taking out my second SSD (a PM961) connected to M.2 port - this seemed to soften the issue somehow, but I was still experiencing problems.

None of these things worked. Anyone has this kind of issue or can suggest any possible resolution?

Re: Lenovo Y700-15 ISK duplicated NVIDIA card in device manager or BSOD after boot on AC adapter

Hi there, Lolo  -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Remove any anti-virus you have installed and use windows defender, apparently that can fix the problem.

Let us know if it helps.

Hi, thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately, I am already using Winows Defender and do not have any other antivirus or anti-malware installed.

Re: Lenovo Y700-15 ISK duplicated NVIDIA card in device manager or BSOD after boot on AC adapter

Can you try the following?

Go to Device Manager and uninstall the Nvidia graphics driver.
- Next is to open Programs and Features then uninstall anything related to Nvidia.
- Once done, download and install the latest driver.
- Here's the link: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
- Reboot the laptop once the latest driver has been installed.
- After the reboot do set Nvidia as the default GPU.
- Here's how: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2615...

Update us how it goes.

Tried this in the past but tried again, the same behavior - the nvidia card is detected with different instance ID and the driver could not be loaded:

What I'm wondering about is how come the problem does not occur when I boot on battery, but does occur when I boot on AC adapter...

Unfortunately, no. If I don't find an answer quick, I'm going to return my laptop as the scenarios kind of suggest a hardware issue. I wrote to NVIDIA support - they are surprised by this behavior as well and were unable to help me. I asked whether there is a way to make the NVIDIA card behave the same on battery as on AC, but they replied that there is no such setting.

Re: Lenovo Y700-15 ISK duplicated NVIDIA card in device manager or BSOD after boot on AC adapter

OK, I think I found the solution.

It seems I have been experiencing two problems at the same time.

1. The problem of BSODs and duplicate GPU was caused by my M.2 SSD. It appears I did not place it firmly enough in the socket (which is hard when putting in the screw). Even when the drive "clicked" when mounted, it could move a little bit left or right, so I had to hold it really tight when putting in the screw. Also, I made sure to install Samsung's NVME driver 2.1.

2. The problem of DirectX reverting to wrong version after boot was caused by Samsung Magician's RAPID mode being turned on for my main SSD drive. After I turned the RAPID mode off (and rebooted and reinstalled latest driver to be sure) this behavior disappeared.

so for now it appears everything is working fine. I will update if something changes.

Re: Lenovo Y700-15 ISK duplicated NVIDIA card in device manager or BSOD after boot on AC adapter

One more update - the problem with wrong directx version reappeared, so I switched my PM961 to older and slower Crucial MX200 2280 and the problem disappeared. It's been several days that I don't experience any issues.

I don't know whether this is Lenovo's fault or the PM961 or maybe they are not 100% compatible.
