Re: [Lenovo Y700-15ISK] High Performance NVMe SSD capped at PCIE 2.0 speeds

2017-01-25, 8:18 AM

I rasied a case with Lenovo on this exact issue. They initial response was promising that they would get engineering to look into it. Then i got this.

With regards to the issue reported, we have not received any updates from Engineering team and I checked with my supervisor on the issue and was advise we cant be certain when the new BIOS update will be available and what changes will be made as BIOS updates are rolled out based on need and specific to a customer's preference and since this is in regards to a 3rd party hardware, it is highly unlikely.

You can monitor our support website for when the next BIOS update will be available.

Should you have any further inquiries please contact us.

Since then we have found that it is the dmi link speed set to pcie 2 speeds and it could be simply  changed via the advanced menu that we are locked out off in the UEFI BIOS. When you dissasemble the bios the setting is their in plain sight. We just cant change it.

Waiting for Lenovo to catch up other laptop manufacturers in their M.2 slot performance....

Meanwhile the market is full with fast M.2  drives....but they're capped because of one unavailable to user bios setting...

From the Hidden Advanced menu in the BIOS you can clearly see the DMI link speed settings. This was extracted from the CDCN52 BIOS.

0x782F5 			Setting: DMI Max Link Speed, Variable: 0xC10 {05 91 69 0E 6A 0E 44 07 34 12 10 0C 10 10 00 03 00}
0x78306 				Option: Auto, Value: 0x0 {09 07 C3 0B 00 00 00}
0x7830D 				Option: Gen1, Value: 0x1 {09 07 2F 03 00 00 01}
0x78314 				Option: Gen2, Value: 0x2 {09 07 30 03 30 00 02}
0x7831B 				Option: Gen3, Value: 0x3 {09 07 31 03 00 00 03}
0x78322 			End of Options {29 02}

I confirmed it is set to Gen2 0x2 by reading the Variable 0xC10 from an EFI Shell, unfortunatly it appears to be a signed variable so without the right utility I couldn't change it.

What is appaling is that Lenovo refuse to change it to unlock the extra performance of these high speed M.2 SSD's when it would be a 2 second job in the Advance Menu.

This is my last Lenovo product as this is just unacceptable.

Y700 is recent and high performance laptop so it should have support also for high speed SSD's, especially if all it takes is to update bios. But it's not bad speed even when capped. Does PCIE SDD load Windows and other basic apps faster than SATA?

Lenovo Support

Would you be so kind to address this issue that we have been discussing since last year?  There has been no specific word for some time from your group regarding this issue and those of us who have been loyal to your products request that you give us feedback on this issue.  We would all like our Y700 PCIE NVMe capable laptops to perform at their best so this is our request to you in this forum to give you this opportunity to explain to us if you expect to make these adjustment to the firmware.  If there are other reasons not yet understood or for reasons that have not yet been addressed, we ask that you present such explainations to us. Whether they are for marketing reasons, engineering, or accounting we hope that you can respond very soon.

Thank you

Thank you for doing all this Redstorm.

Lenovo should release a BIOS update that makes this and other settings available to the user.

They have never been a customer focused company. Will attempt to get of of responsibilities where ever they can.

I don't know why so many are buying these for hard core gaming. MSI is much better My Z70 is purely for a performance desktop equivalent machine. I don't push it near it design and have not idea if it will cool  effectively under high long loads as its rare to enter that level.

Keep waiting because they clearly are not concerned. I have seen issues on Thinkpads for for a year or more without an effective solution.

Yes, loyalty can be bind at times...I just like this model with the hard shell aesthetics so I'm just gonna shoot the flare and hope they respond. Course it could tie into marketing since they have the Legion series just a skip away.
