Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

Hey guys, I need help! I have a Lenovo y700-14ISK with a dedicated AMD Radeon R9 M375 graphics card. Everything runs fine when I'm not gaming but when a program uses the high performance graphics card my screen tears and flickers like mad(see youtube link). As soon as I switch out of the window, the screen tearing stops. I've tried a combination of changing Vsync and settings with no avail. Thus I think is it something wrong with the Radeon M375 graphics card, maybe with the connection?

Radeon driver up to date, BIOS up to date, OS windows 10

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

Hi there, Zehao           -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

This sounds like screen tearing, where the graphics card is rendering frames faster than they can be displayed.

Some games cope better than others, do you notice a difference in different games?

When you play games, do you play on battery or plugged in?

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

Interestingly, this does not happen when I run the same game (league of legends) on intel graphics. It still runs at above 60fps with no problems.

One game that is better at this than others is Overwatch, as I recently discovered.

The problem still is when I enable vsync and triple buffering on AMD control panel, it may have helped slightly but not completely, the screen still tears.

I've always played games plugged in, high performance power setting.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

I have the same problem, and it seems to be hardware. I summarize my situation as follows:

1. When an external monitor is connected, it will not flicker while the one on my laptop still does.

2. In an energy saving model, or when unplugged, the flickering disappears.

3. In Dota 2 it flickers much more frequently than in Call of Duty 10. The most serious situations (in Dota 2) appear in ultal high settings with Vsyc on, and in the lowest setting.

Hi there, Yuhang         -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Did the issue happens with safe mode as well? You could also use the System Restore feature to get your computer back the time when it worked.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

Hi, Shashi

Thanks for answering.

Sorry for that I have missed some information in my previous descriptions. My screen blinks only inside the games, especially in Dota 2. But it is good with any usages besides gaming. And I just got it in Dec. 9th, the blinking exists on my first trial with Dota 2.

So far, my problem is not very serious and doesn't affect usages, just being a littile bit unpleasant. Sometimes it is a whole blink of the screen, and sometimes there appears a horizontal white bar in random location.

Please also note that the blinking is not observed on my external display. And in graphically more intensive game COD 10 the blinking doesn't appear quite often.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

My issue is the same has yours. Glitching does not happen on external displays.

It seems like it's a connection issue similar to this one. I hoped I didn't have to open it up but I might have to try this out.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

  1. Get the latest drivers for your graphics card
  2. Optimise game settings

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

Driver is up to date. But I really think it is nothing wrong with the graphics card, because external display works very well with it.

Re: Lenovo Y700 AMD Graphics Card Screen Tear/Flicker

I think I fixed it for now. I've opened up the laptop and disassembled it to the screen connection able. For me, unplugging and re-plugging the display cable from the motherboard solved this problem. Seems like this is a common problem for some of the ideapad machines. Check hardware maintenence guide for how to do it. I do not suggest trying this unless you have some experience working with hardware!
