Lenovo Y700 fans start working loud and stop randomly

Hi, hope you can help me. I saw some similar posts about the fans but in my case the fans go very loud randomly and go to complete silence every 5-10 minutes with 1% - 3% CPU usage. For instance just simply browsing, not watching any videos or anything. Uninstalling Lenovo power managment utility didn't help, updating BIOS didn't help either. The room temperature is 19 degrees. The laptop is 2 weeks old and has been doing that from the very begining. Any other suggestions please?

Hi Gerdab,

Thanks for posting!

Do you know the average temp of your CPU when you're not performing intensive tasks?

I also have this problem. Fans are noisy even if cpu temp is 35-40 and sometimes their speed i think goes to max because for 2-4seconds the noise is horrible its like a bldc motor there. and while gaming with 70 C temp is at full speed and is veeery noisy.

Re: Lenovo Y700 fans start working loud and stop randomly

Its a combination of CPU load and (room) temprature. If your laptop temprature drops, then your fans will stop working. When something CPU-intense raises the temprature the fans will start to spin at full speed just for 2 seconds and then drop down to minimum RPM. Its a routine that happens whenever the fans stop completely. In warmer days, lets say summer, you wont notice this because the fans will work constantly, even at the lowest RPMS thus not causing fan speed spikes.

P.S if your fans are making squeaking/abnormal noises you may need to have your laptop checked

Re: Lenovo Y700 fans start working loud and stop randomly

The max temp was 42 degrees. I used Core Temp to monitor it. But fans go crazy even at temp of 28 degrees. Also I keep thinking if this is related to my sound popping/clicking issue. It keeps popping very randomly as well, but mostly when moving a mouse after being idle for few minutes... could everything be power related, I am lost here, my old y50 didn't have any of these issues.

But I don't even do any intense tasks, it just starts spinning like crazy for about 5-10 seconds and goes completely silent again. Why my old y50 didn't do anything like that then? Also this sound popping clicking sound makes me worry there is something more. All drivers are updated by the way.

Re: Lenovo Y700 fans start working loud and stop randomly

I have resolved the popping sound in my laptop by updating to this driver (or above) http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/17883/. The fan behaviour is implemented within the bios, and cannot be changed without a bios update. It seems to be more agressive but personally i prefer to have my laptop cool. :-)

P.S if you are missing Dolby Audio after the driver install, you may need to re-run the setup

Thank you, I am downloading the driver now, fingers crossed it helps! I also prefer to have my laptop cool but this is so unusual for me as my Y50 never had such crazy loud fan and as this supposed to be an upgrade I would expect it to be rather quieter than louder.

Re: Lenovo Y700 fans start working loud and stop randomly

Same to me about the loud fans and popping sound. Very disappointing, I had much bigger expectations for my y700.

Popping sound fixes for me if NOT installing the Lenovo driver and just leave Windows 10 default instalaion driver.
