Lenovo Y700 shuts down when unpluged

My Lenovo is Y700-17ISK Laptop (ideapad) - Type 80Q0. Both the non removable battery and the charger/adaptor are original and in good condition. No problems so far (2 years).

Yesterday I noticed that it shutts down instantly when  disconnected from adapter and starts only when connected. The battery indicator showed "pluged in, charging " but the battery remained on constant percentage (56).

I searched for a sollution and tried to uninstall/reinstal the battery drivers. The only change was the percentage which is only 6 pct now (pluged in, charging). Tried also to update  Power Management driver and BIOS driver (as per advice found in Lenovo support center). The system said "you need to charge your battery over 30 % in order to update BIOS driver".

Could someone help me with a viable sollution.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Lenovo Y700 shuts down when unpluged

Hi Stranger3,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I am in doubt of the integrity of the battery even if the softwares would still detect it as normal (internal cells may no longer be consumable but structurally ok).

In such cases, better to test the battery mechanically instead. Shutdown the machine and observe the battery indicator (page 29 HMM)  which I am expecting to be blinking amber (less than 20% charged). Connect the charger but do not turn it on. Have it plugged in for 3-4 hours and see if the battery led turns to blinking white (20-80%). If this stayed blinking amber then the battery is not being charged.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Thanks for your reply.

Yes it is blinking slowly in amber and nothing changed for hours. Does it means the battery is dead? Or could it be some problem in drivers or connections?

Re: Lenovo Y700 shuts down when unpluged

Hi Stranger3,

Greetings.

The mechanical step we had has nothing to do with drivers as it simply set up a circuit for contact charging. It can be a battery issue or connections.

To isolate without any special tools, if another known good compatible battery works with the laptop then we expect that it is most likely the battery. If the same battery charges on another machine, then perhaps the connection. Service centers may offer tools to further test too.

Regards
