Lenovo Y720 Sound Problem

2018-07-03, 22:20 PM

I recently bought a brand new Lenovo Y720 and so far am happy with the laptop except for one glaring problem. When I plug in my Logitech 5.1 speaker system using the 3.5mm jack, I get a strange buzzing sound as soon as the Dolby Atmos pop up appears. The only way to make it go away is to play something when I plug the speakers into the jack. If for any reason I pause or stop the music playback, the buzzing sound starts again. This is really really annoying and I am sure it is not the speakers, I've used them on two Acer Laptop and they work perfectly. I've updated all drivers from the support page but the noise persists.

Please help.

Disappointed customer.

Thank you but it doesn't work. Have tried rolling back the driver, installing from Windows Update and installing from the Lenovo download's page. Have even updated the BIOS. No change.

Try to reproduce the problem using headphones. Also try different power plans and/or using the laptop without the AC adaptor plugged in.

If you can also try a live linux image and the problem is not there then it is probably a driver issue in windows

Thanks for the idea. I've tried the computer with a Linux live image and the buzzing sound is still there. I also tried it with headphones and they don't have a buzzing sound.

I did however discover that the sound is present only when the laptop is connect to the charger OR an external display via the HDMI, it is definitely louder when both are connected but still quite loud when either one are connected  I had not noticed this because when I initially tried unplugging charger, I would leave the display connected as it didn't occur to me to disconnect it.

The buzzing also disappears if I connect the speakers when music is playing but if I pause playback of the music/video, it starts up again after a few seconds, meaning I can't leave the speakers connected.

What does this mean?

Well this seems to happen because the speakers you are connecting also require AC power, like the TV does also. I guess both your speakers and your TV power plug do not have a grounding cable/connector right?

A grounding issue perhaps ?

I think that if you try connecting speakers that do not require external power you will have no sound buzzing at all

Well then it's definitely a grounding issue with the laptop. I have tried the same speakers with not one but TWO Acer Aspire laptops plugged into the same power strip and no buzzing at all. I have also tried with the my phone plugged into its charger and no buzzing either. The external display is grounded but the speakers are not, they have a two prong plug. I cannot replace my entire speaker sysytem because this Lenovo laptop's sound card is is not properly grounded. These are good quality brand new Logitech speakers.

And the problem is somehow software related because if I plug the speakers whilst there is music playing on the laptop, the buzzing will not start. Only if I pause the music for more than a few seconds will it kick in.

You should send it over to lenovo for inspection.

One last thing i would try if i were you would be to disconnect any device from the neighboring USB port and connect the speakers using a microphone/headphones splitter to see if there is any interference because of the combo mic/headphones jack the laptop has

Hello,

I have a 5.1 logitech sistem (Z506) and I had the same problem but i found out why ... the wireing cover from the speakers is not that briliant and if the wires are close to each other (or you don not unwind the wires) the buzzing appears for those speaker (not all) this was in my case and the solution was to unwind the wires and make sure they don't overlap eachother.

It seems to definitely be a grounding problem. When I touch laptop with no shoes on, this is what happens (see video below)....

Connecting the laptop directly to a power socket results in the loudest buzzing ever. Touching the ground of the socket and then touching the ground of the unplugged laptop power bank, also results in buzzing.

Have just ordered a headphone/microphone splitter on Amazon. Have also called landlord to check grounding of apartment but none of my other appliances is behaving strangely. I'm running out of options but to just send this laptop back, I'm just worried this is a problem with all of these Legions and getting a new one won't fix it?
