Lenovo y700 backlight bleed

2015-12-23, 17:05 PM
Hello, this is my first post here! I just bought a Lenovo Y700 today, and I'm very impressed with it so far. However there's just one thing bothering me: backlight bleeding. I've never owned anything with an IPS display before, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Could you please tell me if this is acceptable or not? Does it get worse with time or stay the same? I read that it's normal for IPS displays to an extent. Is that true?

Here are some pics: http://imgur.com/a/rAHFv
The one on the bottom worries me a bit.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Interlope,

Welcome to the Community Forums,

I was not able to open http://imgur.com/a/rAHFv
Seems your issue might be similar to this thread . Check on the image provded .
On the sample image glow seems to appear on different angles too.

 - Link to images

 - Link to images

"IPS glow should only be apparent at extreme viewing angles in very dark images or black screens. If it is visible from head on and always in the same spots, it's not IPS glow, it's backlight bleed " .

In normal IPS display, such glow usually is mimimal and be lesser than an inch.

Else call in tech support for repair especially if return is not an option.

Hope this helped you in your decision.

Regards

Well. I can only see it when I'm viewing the screen head on. if I look at it from an angle it disappears. It does looks very similar to the images you posted when it boots up.

Do these work then?

Hi Interloper ,

Thanks for the immediate reply.

I was able to check on the image provided , and just as it appeared bigger than usual on the top left .

Very distinct is the one on the bottom,

Best keep those image for reference and call in Tech support for possible repair of the LCD and may include additional parts like the bezel .

You can call them or even schedule them to call you on your prefered time .

You can also engage on the tech chat team during business hours.

Regards

Well one last question. Does backlight bleeding get worst with time or just stays the same?

I'll probably try to get it changed because I only bought it today. Thank you for your help! I appreciate it.

Hi Interloper ,

Some would take months ,  if its just a glow ( disappears when changed in angle ) some would just tape the inner bezel to minimize the white lights.

But if it's a bleeding ( same appearance on the bottom part of the image you had and very distinct ) best to have a repaired on the LCD and bezel ,

It might be as simple as tight bezel screws causing this that goes loose as time goes by.

Still , this is not normal and needs attention.

Regards,

Hi,

The first Y700-15isk I ordered had a heavy backlight bleeding problem. You can take a look at those pictures : http://postimg.org/gallery/2nuejwu1q/

Lenovo agreed to replace the laptop. After 1 week and a half, I received a new laptop wich also have a backlight bleeding problem...not worst as the first one I had, but it's still really annoying when watching a movie in the dark or playing horror games. Here are the pics : http://postimg.org/gallery/3i3q2udlg/

I seriously think of asking a refund to Lenovo...or maybe ask for a final attemp to get a Y700 with a decent screen. Any idea if the UHD screen or the touchscreen have less chance of having a screen bleeding problem?

And you guys think this is normal to have such backlight bleeding on a new laptop?

Thanks

Ok wow, yours looks a lot worse than mine. I would not be able to tolerate that.

I ended up exchanging mine for another one, which also had the bleed issue. And so did the unit that was on display in the store, so I'm assuming it's a common issue with the Y700.

However, the new unit I got has very acceptable bleed in just one corner, so I decided to live with it. I stopped noticing it after a while, and it hasn't gotten worse and hasn't improved either.

I really love the laptop so far, and the only issues I had with it have been problems with Windows 10 rather than the hardware itself. I think for me it's a fair trade-off. I'm sorry but I can't answer your questions, but perhaps someone else here can.

Hi Baribo ,

Definitely you would have to contact Lenovo tech support .

There are degree of screen bleed but if it interferes with how you normally use it and is affecting the expected features of your laptop as intended then it needs to be attended.
