Looking for help with a slow internet connection

2021-10-13, 21:41 PM

So the Lenovo is my son's laptop - Legion 5 15ARH05 - 8 months old. Lenovo Vantage says the system is up to date.

The internet connection is exceptionally slow - Download = 3.05 Mbps - that's with wifi on and LAN/ethernet plugged in.
I have a MacBook Pro on the same network getting 200+ Mbps download on Wifi alone.

Does anyone know how I troubleshoot or correct this problem?

Thanks in advance

Jez

Hi

Perhaps a few more details...  MTM of the device please.

If you look at the attached file and rename it to a .bat and run it, it may help with info.

Letter 'B' for instance to give a ping time.

17 ms is my benchmark, but you can try against the macbook?

K, L,M and N may yield some info.

Q is worth a try.

If in doubt please ask.

Forgive me, I'm a little slow with some of the tech talk but eventually get my head around it. Also a bit slow on the acronyms too, what's MTM of the device? To run the 'a2z NetFix.txt Should I rename to 'a2z NetFix.bat' then right mouse and 'run as admin'? Apologies if my questions are dumb. Thank you in advance

The Model Type and Number.

Don't accidentally post your serial number, that's one supposed to be confidential.

The Legion 5 15ARH05 should have an MTM starting with 82B... Don't take my word for it though, make sure to check properly and don't accidentally post your confidential serial number.

Re:Looking for help with a slow internet connection

OK... eventually I'm on it...

Product ID: 82B50042UK

Ran the tests from the .bat file and recorded some speed tests (attached image). Speed tests were marginally better than last night (last night speed tests were showing 3.5/4 Mbps, today 8.2) - but when you compare it to the MBP it still shows there's an issue (MBP -220Mbps). Sat in the same place, 3m from the router, tests performed within the same 5mins on both machines. Does this info help you kind folk figure out what is going on? Something has to be wrong, I must be missing something.

Thanks in advance.

(As I'm a new user I don't think they're letting me post much but hope you got the jpg)

Hi

Well it's a start ....

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-5-15arh05/82b5/82b50042uk/?linkTrack=Caps%3ABody_BrowseProduct

  • BIOS Update  -  EUCN31WW  -  09 Feb 2021  -  7.26 MB  -  Critical
  • WLAN Driver (Realtek, Intel)
  • Intel_WLAN_22.0.1.1-L_phwfw02236_WHQL_DCH..Realtek_2024.0.8.127_WHQL
  • 12 Jan 2021  -  11.86 MB  -  Recommended

Perhaps try Intel directly...

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/search.html?ws=text#t=Downloads&layout=table&cf:Downloads=[%7B%22actualLabel%22%3A%22Wireless%22%2C%22displayLabel%22%3A%22Wireless%22%7D]

This download record installs the Windows® 10 and Windows 11*
WiFi package drivers 22.80.1 for the AX211/AX210/
AX200/9000/8000 series Intel® Wireless Adapters.
Latest version: 22.80.1

None of the above explains any problems with the Ethernet connection.

So ...

This is a hybrid command, PowerShell running in a DOS box cmd.exe

C:\>powershell Get-NetAdapter

Name                      InterfaceDescription                    ifIndex Status       MacAddress             LinkSpeed
----                      --------------------                    ------- ------       ----------             ---------
Wi-Fi                     Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560                    16 Up           CC-CC-CC-CC-CC-22     866.7 Mbps
Bluetooth Network Conn... Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Netw...       5 Disconnected CC-CC-CC-CC-CC-26         3 Mbps

Which shows the speed is upto 866.7 and I get an OpenReach amount of less than 10% of that.

WinKey + R  and type

powershell get-netadapter >> C:\GNA.txt

>>  (redirect) writes the output to a txt file called gna.txt on the C: where you can view and delete as wanted.

If in doubt please ask.

Hi Ann_Droid

Thank you for your valuable input. I followed up the intel driver update and that seemed to make a big impact. I'm now getting 212Mbps from the Lenovo. Perhaps that's what I should have tried first, I just had no idea where to start - being a MacBoy it's not something I'm in the way of doing. I'm aware that I need to brush up on my pc awareness skills. Hopefully that's solved the problem, I'm very grateful for your input and guidance, you make the internet worth while having!

I hope to post again with further learning problems just for the positive experience. Thank you!

---BTW ... Did you manage to see the jpg I posted wih the results of your excellent cmd line .bat file? I couldn't open it so I wondered if anyone else could?

Prego.

Yes I did, and do you know that I also use command line, when - IF my iMac ever works.

It's a 27" 2011 model, with a dead CMOS battery.

I have misplaced the original disks and cannot seem to be able to create a bootable original OS.

So I have "real" problems that a simple dd command wont fix.

Just in case........

Which would, I am sure, boot on my iMAC, to no actual purpose obviously.

If in doubt please ask.
