M.2 SSD Upgrade for Lenovo Legion Y520

2021-07-19, 12:10 PM

Hello,

I have a Lenovo Legion y520 i bought at the end of 2017, it still works perfectly fine but i want to put a new m.2 ssd there. i want to know if the "Samsung 980 1 TB PCIe 3.0 (up to 3.500 MB/s) NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-V8V1T0BW)" from amazon would work with my laptop.

Thank you very much

Hello @PeePeePooPoo, the model you have mentioned above has the same interface with the 970 evo which is m.2 nvme.

Any drive that is m.2 nvme spec should work. They buy the 970 evo because of dram (drams are said to make the ssd's life longer) and that is why they cost more, the new 980 ssd from samsung is dramless. But this doesn't mean you should get one with dram, besides technology evolves.

More information here: DRAM vs. DRAM-less SSDs: Not so different after all

Hope this helps!

Hello @PeePeePooPoo,

Thanks for the reply.

I've checked the compatible parts list with the machine and it lists a few SSD's.

You can view that here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y520-15ikbn/80wk/80wk001vax/parts/display/compatible

Since it lists some SSD's as compatible you should have the ability to add an SSD to this machine.

Regards,

Re:M.2 SSD Upgrade for Lenovo Legion Y520

Hello,

Thanks for the reply I just want to clarify one more thing before I buy an SSD. Would Samsung 980 1TB PCIe 3.0 (up to 3.500 MB/s) NVMe M.2 work on my laptop. I have seen many people use the Samsung 970 Evo on Lenovo Legion Y520 but it is slightly costlier than 980. I just want to know if 980 is compatible with my laptop. Like is the design on 980 the same as 970?. If that's the case I can buy the Samsung's 1TB 980.

This is the full model name of the SSD: Samsung 980 1 TB PCIe 3.0 (up to 3.500 MB/s) NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-V8V1T0BW)

Thank you very much
