Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Hello community.

I have a Lenovo LOQ 14th gen (Custom) with i7 14700HX and 4060. The problem is that whenever I run a graphically demanding game like GoW, everything runs smoothly for 5-10 mins, but then all of a sudden, I get a MASSIVE lag, dropping the fps from 80+ to 1-2, and  the GPU usage drops from 100% to 10-20%. Then the only way out becomes a force stop from task manager, and after that the whole laptop becomes laggy for sometime (even ms word and stuff, not anything heavy). What could be the reason for this? In the  "Power and Sleep" settings, it is set to High Performance mode, and GPU working mode is set to Hybrid.

The problem only comes when dGPU gets activated.

P.S: Sorry for posting on the Legion Forum, could not find any for LOQ series.

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Hi ZesionX,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It sounds like your laptop might be overheating, causing the GPU to throttle back its performance to prevent damage. This is a common issue when running graphically demanding games.

Here are a few things you can try:

  1. Update your drivers: Make sure your GPU drivers are up to date. You can check for updates using the Lenovo Vantage app.

  2. Check for dust: Dust can block the air vents and cause overheating. Make sure the vents are clean and the fans are working properly.

  3. Use a cooling pad: A cooling pad can help keep your laptop cool during intense gaming sessions.

  4. Change power settings: Try changing the GPU working mode from Hybrid to Discrete. This will force the laptop to use the dGPU all the time, which might help with the stuttering issue.

Best regards,

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Hey Jack,

Thanks, I got the issue. CPU temps are reaching 100 degrees. But while researching about this laptop, one standout thing about it was its thermals, as it was not crossing 80 degrees while running titles like Cyberpunk on Ultra settings, and I am playing NFS Heat ;-;. Does this mean the fault is in the hardware?

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Hi ZesionX,

It's concerning to hear that your CPU temperatures are reaching 100 degrees. While it's possible that there could be a hardware issue, it's also possible that there could be other factors at play.

Here are a few things you can try:

  1. Reapply thermal paste: Over time, the thermal paste that helps transfer heat from your CPU to the heatsink can degrade, leading to higher temperatures. You might want to consider reapplying the thermal paste.

  2. Check for software issues: Sometimes, certain software can cause your CPU to work harder than it needs to, leading to higher temperatures. Make sure all your software is up to date, and consider running a virus scan just in case.

  3. Contact Lenovo Support: If you're still having issues, it might be a good idea to get in touch with Lenovo Support. They can help diagnose the issue and suggest potential solutions. You can contact them here.

Remember, consistently high temperatures can damage your CPU in the long run, so it's important to address this issue as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Jack_Lenovo1

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Hello Community,

I recently bought a customized LOQ 15IRX9 with a 4060 and i7-14700HX. But I have been experiencing severe CPU overheating issues in it. Even when running outdated titles like Far Cry and NFS Heat, the CPU temperatures start hitting 97 degrees, even on quiet mode and with a cooling pad within 15 minutes, and exponentially quicker on Balanced and Performance modes, and then starts throttling like no tomorrow. Any possible fixes for this?

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

Greetings, ZesionX!

Sorry to hear about the overheating issue you're experiencing with your LOQ 15IRX9.  Here are a few steps we can try:

Method 1

Go to Settings > Additional Power Settings > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Restore Plan Defaults.

Method 2

Type Edit Power Plan and open Power Options.
Click Change Advanced Power Settings.
Expand Processor Power Management and set Minimum / Maximum Processor State for both Plugged in and On Battery settings:

Minimum - 5%
Maximum - 100%
(can be reduced / increased depending on which works best for you)

If these steps don't resolve the issue, I recommend contacting technical team for further assistance. You can also submit a service request here or find a local authorized service center using service provider locator. They can help diagnose and fix the issue.

Best regards,

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

I'm having the same issue with my Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 (Inter core i7 14700HX with RTX 4060 8GB, 16 GB RAM)

My laptop crashed after first 2 weeks of gaming,
and the system wouldn't turn back on.

When the Lenovo support team replaced my system's motherboard (it was said there was a short circuit in the previous one)
all my games that i used to easily play on it before started stuttering and lagging significantly.

When i tested Red dead redemption 2 on Favour Quality settings on 1440p
it is giving me 25 - 30 fps

Where the same system and settings is giving this youtuber 60 - 70 fps easily on the same laptop configuration
Timestamp 22:55 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9vNuawX3zw

I am attaching 2 screenshots below
My Gaming Laptop's Performance - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zmmmeGcTucO6FjVlt2DBTzt6d4O0HnCe/view?usp=sharing
Venom's Tech's (Youtuber) Gaming Laptop's Performance - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wxtgUTnz0HSmzyZqYoaUqIEhe18HBlkl/view?usp=sharing

where you can see the following things :-

1) FPS is nearly half in my gameplay
2) CPU Utilization in my game is at 7% - 10% while his is between 25% - 32%
3) GPU Wattage is at 34W for me while his laptop is reaching 103W
4) GPU & CPU temperatures of my laptop is quite higher than his as well

this is very disheartening considering it is a brand new laptop which i got with my hard earned money

Re:Massive stuttering issue when switching to dGPU

You can check your current BIOS version in Vantage by hitting "Info" in the live system stats section of the main Vantage screen (see attached screenshot). The number in the version string denotes the BIOS version number (eg: KWCN46WW for the Legion 7i Pro Gen 8 means that 46 is the BIOS version).

If your BIOS is older than the one posted on the support site, download the BIOS update and run it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS update (your system will reboot during the update process).
